Season Preview Pod!

Key questions in part 1:

1. Is Julius Randle's playoff level of play sustainable or was it mostly (rounds 1+2) matchup based?
2. How does Naz Reid live up to his contract on this roster?
3. Can this team return to being a top 3 defense or is the talk more sizzle than steak?

Couldn’t maintain the intensity in the face of a Jamal Murray/THJ 3rd quarter heater and the b2b caught up to them with some dead legs on 3pt shooting in the 4th.

Obviously missed Ant, but could have really used the Jaylen Clark curveball to throw at Murray that 3rd quarter.

Denver scored 45 points in the 3Q… and Jokic scored just 2 of them, only assisting on 6 more.

Jamal Murray (23 PTS) and Tim Hardaway Jr (15 PTS) out-scored the Wolves 38-29 by themselves, shooting a combined 12/17 FG.

Wolves trail 102-94 entering the 4th
Well, the best half of basketball that the Wolves have played in this young season.

6 BLKs and 9 TOs forced paint a good picture of the extra hustle on the court tonight.

Naz Reid’s hustle especially stand out (just please don’t make him guard Jokic 1-on-1 anymore!)
ISO Randle and Naz on Jokic every time he’s on the floor. He doesn’t have the foot speed to keep up with those guys, and it’s the only way they are going to have any chance at limiting his production.
Whoa whoa whoa. The whistle had clearly blown before the next bit of contact. That is absolutely a terrible review.
Clearly a terrible call, but all the challenge is going to get here is a side out for Denver.

Denver has very little interior shot blocking - one of the main reasons Edwards is always so effective against them.

McDaniels and Randle picking up that slack so far tonight with some beautiful finishes around the rim
Turned into a seesaw quarter. Followed up the two good passes with a TO, then got lost on a back door cut, and then made a nice layup.

3 positives
3 negatives

Not going to hang onto the playing time if those numbers are even.
Beautiful pass to Naz on the roll from Dillingham, and then follows it up with bounce pass to Rudy which draws a foul. Keep stacking the positives
No one can guard Jokic 1-on-1, but asking Naz to do it is crazy.

Let’s go Dilly!
A masked Rob Dillingham is getting first quarter minutes at PG with the Wolves down Anthony Edwards and Jaylen Clark
Watching the Spurs while waiting for the Wolves… and I have no idea how any team will be able to slow Wemby down.

Beringer might quickly become the 2nd most important person in the franchise cause he at least has a physical profile to be more than a traffic cone in front of Wemby.

Really hoping he cracks the rotation tonight and stacks some positive plays
The pod paramour, Brianna, joins to hand out her own unique brand of game awards!

Julius Randle’s game is compared to an oak tree, Bones Hyland’s movement is likened to a grasshopper, and she makes the case for “promoting” Mike Conley from the floor to upper management.

The official update from the Wolves mentions a re-evaluation taking place a week from now. Opens the door to his returning sooner than anticipated.
Guessing they’ll still be favored in that many? Though I think if you gave me 5-3 in this stretch right now… I’d sign up for that.
Wolves schedule over the next two weeks:

10/27 vs Denver
10/29 vs Lakers (No Luka)
11/1 @ Charlotte
11/3 @ Brooklyn
11/5 @ NYK
11/7 vs Utah
11/9 @ Sacramento
11/10 @ Utah

Makes the idea of getting off to a hot start a lot harder, but still lots of winnable games.
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will miss two weeks with a right hamstring strain, sources tell ESPN.
It has felt this way watching games this season - way too many free throws.

The answer to the SGA problem is not to give star players the same whistle. Nobody wants to watch free throw contests.

Allow more marginal contact, call push offs, and actually fine/review flopping.
There were 67 instances where a player took 15+ FTAs in a single game last season.

There have already been 11 in the first week of this season, including 4 last night.

Wolves played offensively better than the final stats and scoreboard will say. Some good ball movement that was negated by cold shooting.

Defense still very inconsistent - it’s a struggle to find five guys at the same time that play great team defense.

Randle stepped up with no Ant.
We’re 3/3 now with good Randle games. Beginning to look like the version of him we saw in the playoffs is here to stay.
Bones Hyland is more of an NBA rotation player than I thought. Tons of credit to him - he’s been solid in all of his appearances thus far.
