Season Preview Pod!

Key questions in part 1:

1. Is Julius Randle's playoff level of play sustainable or was it mostly (rounds 1+2) matchup based?
2. How does Naz Reid live up to his contract on this roster?
3. Can this team return to being a top 3 defense or is the talk more sizzle than steak?

Became a lifelong Timberwolves fan when my mom brought me to a playoff game vs the Blazers in the 1999/2000 season.

My appreciation for KG has only aged like a fine wine since then - his combination of talent and competitive fire is still something I’ve only seen once as a fan of this franchise.
Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is reuniting with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Lynx in a new, all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development, sources told ESPN. His long-awaited No. 21 Wolves jersey retirement will also happen in Minnesota.

Bringing this back up from the previous game. Wolves have this terrible habit of hunting the best defender on the other team.

Huge part of the loss tonight goes on Randle for trying to take the matchup personally and then shooting rather than deferring.
Kings generally have one good defender on the floor (Keegan Murray) and the Wolves still found themselves attacking him 1-on-1 rather than forcing a switch or moving the ball and finding a better matchup.

It is striking to watch other teams hunt advantageous matchups while we tend to ignore them.

Been driving me crazy.
Can't say I understand why the Wolves are continually attacking Jaren Jackson Jr. on offense given that he's the best Grizzlies defender by a mile.

No surprise that the offense has dried up as a result.

Or not. *Expletive*
Frustrating game when Jock Landale is more locked in from distance than anyone on the Wolves squad.

But 5 minutes left and the squad is more than due to start seeing some 3s falling!

Would be shocked if this is overturned. Randle didn’t even raise his forearm up till after the initial whistle/contact.
December 18, 2025 at 2:57 AM
But I do watch enough to know that he has a lot of dumb fouls!
Jaren Jackson Jr. vs the Wolves is a first ballot hall of famer. I don’t watch enough of the Grizzlies to know why he doesn’t always play this way.

Now playing next to Jaden and Rudy… makes a ton more sense!
Rob
Donte
TJ
Clark
Randle

That’s a… choice…. for a lineup combo. Zero rim protection for Dillingham? Seems like there’s a better way to organize that.

Gobert has been dominant to start - on pace for a 20-20 game if he can keep it up!

Also, Bones continues to offer some consistency/explosiveness this team has been missing at the point!

From last night's episode, I gave a 1.0 version of this team's playoff rotation(as currently constructed). Rankings break down like this (minutes in parentheses):

1. Ant (40)
2. Jaden (40)
3. Randle (38)
4. DiVincenzo (33)
5. Gobert (31)
6. Naz (30)
7. Bones (16)
8. Clark (12)

Overall, a good Rob Dillingham stint. His effort on defense is genuinely disruptive and the first step speed can create a lot on offense… just has to get better angles to finish.

No episode tonight with the late finish and Mitch being under the weather. We’ll be back Sunday, but here are the awards:

“Big Ticket”: Rudy Gobert (24-14 on 11-13 shooting? 👀)

“Sam Cassell Big Balls”: Donte DiVincenzo (10 4th quarter points and two tide-turning 3s)

“And I helped!”: TJ and Rob!

Green light Naz Reid night.

Very curious about who gets the start tonight.

Bones? Dillingham? Clark? Shannon? Could make a case for any of them.
No Anthony Edwards tonight in Golden State. He is out with right foot soreness

As always, a great read from @brittrobson.bsky.social going through the state of the Wolves and why, even though they are on a 51 win pace, some of us aren’t feeling overly enthused by the on-court product.

As someone who doesn’t want to sell the last of his Dillingham stock, loved this point:

48 minutes of effort is becoming my favorite basketball team’s white whale.

On the court, it is easy to single out players. But if it’s a DNA issue, I argue there are larger questions to be asked about the coach.

Also very proud of my Bones Hyland = Jameis Winston comp!

Another game they deserve to lose just based on playing a team that is playing harder.

This is a DNA issue for the team and if they like/respect their coach as so many of them claim, you’d think they’d give better effort on a nightly basis.
Disappointing start for the Wolves where Phoenix has just been playing harder.

Wolves were 0/6 from deep on pretty open looks - that will turn around. But rather than coming out to make a statement, they seem pretty content to just go with the flow.

Wolves are shooting 26% from 3 and 67% from the FT line. They are much, much more talented than the Suns that are on the floor, but it's a tie game going to the fourth. Ott really has these Suns playing hard and together.

Alcoholics Anonymous has fewer steps than Grayson Allen took on the shot before halftime.

The effort that Randle just gave in transition defense would have gotten any of the young guys benched for the game.
