Welcome to the lifeboat party! I'm D. V. Bishop, author of the Cesare Aldo historical thrillers set in Renaissance Italy. Love books, reading, and helping other writers.

In my Copious Spare Time™ I write comics, lead three creative writing programmes, and am trying to finish a PhD.

My fave film?
a close up of a person 's face with makeup and pearls
Alt: Amid flashing lights Dr Frank N Furter looks up in triumph and shouts Oh, Rocky! It's a scene from The Rocky Horror Picture Show starring the delectable Tim Curry. Love that the auto-suggested caption is "a close up of a person 's face with makeup and pearls". I used to go see TRHPS at least once a month at the Hollywood Cinema in Avondale. Dressed up, throw rice, the works. I can still shout most of the audience participation lines unprompted.

Hand to You Know Whomst, this is someone’s FB profile photo, and it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen all day.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

CARNIVAL OF LIES just hit 250 ratings on GR, a lovely wee milestone! The latest Cesare Aldo historical thriller is now out in paperback, too. Think Mission Impossible X Oceans Eleven in Renaissance Venice: www.panmacmillan.com/authors/d-v-...

Wonderful. This is one of the best comics panels ever drawn. It - and the pages around it - rewired my brain and changed the way I talked about and understood art and storytelling. If there is any book I would recommend unreservedly to creative people, it’s Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics.
Post a black and white panel and tell us who drew it.

Went to see Rental Family at the pictures, my first visit to an actual cinema in months. A quiet, thoughtful, heartfelt film which I savoured. You might appreciate it too, but mileages vary and other caveats get emptored.

Watching Rental Family reminded of 3 great story beats that fit most genres:
a man sitting on a couch with the words " what do you need me for " on the bottom
