99% of adults never served and don't understand.

My ancestor fought with Perry on Lake Erie, Jackson at New Orleans and became a professional soldier after that.

After the fall of the Hungarian Communist government, and his rehabilitation by Yad Vashem despite his duty in the most brutal and inhuman theatre of WWII and murder of civilians during the 1956 revolution, Kiraly died in his sleep at age 97 in 2009.

Kiraly fled to the United States, where CIA put him in charge of "The Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation."

A year later he got a job teaching history at Brooklyn College and ultimately became chairman of the history department.

Despite verifiably ordering the murder of pro-communist protesters and employees of the Hungarian Working People's Party during the 1956 uprising and fighting on the particularly brutal Eastern Front of WWII, Kiraly was declared "Righteous Among Nations" in 1993 by Yad Vashem.

Kiraly was sentenced to death for his war crimes in 1945, but was released shortly thereafter and allowed to join the Hungarian People's Army.

After the overthrow of the Communist government of Hungary in 1992, Kiraly joined the anticommunist "Alliance of Free Democrats."

On this date in 1956, Hungarian army officer Bela Kiraly led an anticommunist militia in an attack on the headquarters of the Hungarian Working People's Party.

Kiraly was an officer of the N*zi aligned Kingdom of Hungary during WWII who actually surrendered Budapest to the Red Army.
