This sort of analysis ignores the reality of elections. Most people are not ideological. They vote based on their political en situation and which message they hear that seems to address it. Liberals then and now ignore this reality and lose what ought to be winnable elections.

If the Democratic Party doesn't stand for anything, doesn't have the institutional ability to vote as a bloc for the people who vote for them, and doesn't exist except as a collection of individuals with no actual common interests but those of the ruling class then what good are they?
