Thanks to @reckless.bsky.social for having me as a guest on Decoder!

We spoke about GenAI in education, how digital natives don’t exist, children must be taught how to learn well with technology, and how students’ theory of artificial minds impacts how they use GenAI

Despite LLMs not really being intelligent, tech companies push them into education.

Can a system that does not think teach? Only if you think teaching = speaking.

I’ve been running around asking tech execs and academics if language was the same as intelligence for over a year now - and, well, it isn’t. @benjaminjriley.bsky.social explains how the bubble is built on ignoring cutting-edge research into the science of thought www.theverge.com/ai-artificia...

Great piece @reckless.bsky.social

“the most obvious outcome is nothing more than a common-sense repository. . .AI system might remix and recycle our knowledge in interesting ways. But . . . It will be forever trapped in the vocabulary we’ve encoded in our data . . . a dead-metaphor machine.”
Grateful to The Verge for publishing my essay on why large-language models are not going to achieve general intelligence nor push the scientific frontier.

Resharing our great paper on how teachers support game-based learning.

Teachers are 🔑
🚨New article🚨 in Computers & Education

We created and validated a measure of how teachers scaffold game-based learning.

Turns out, teachers are great at cheering students on and keeping them on task—but need more support/resources to guide deeper thinking during games.

Hehe. Fun. But, does it replicate when Batman enters the lab?
The Batman effect: A female experimenter, appearing pregnant, boarded the train. In the experimental condition, an additional experimenter dressed as Batman entered from another door. Passengers were significantly more likely to offer their seat when Batman was present (67.21% vs. 37.66%).

Dear Journal editors, read the £@€¥ reviews!

Student MS rejected after 2 very positive evals: work was a fit, methodology and theoretically strong.

Only suggested minor editing: remove repeated definitions, move structural validity evidence from appendix to ms.

Rejected.

WTF?

Hey everyone, OpenAI is launching "ChatGPT for Teachers" today. Do they remain committed to promoting a pedagogical vision that is at odds with our best understanding of how kids learn? But of course!

As an avid gamer, I don’t like the outcome of games leading to socioemotional problems for kids

As a researcher, we have to go where the evidence takes us.

Will have to dig into this more.

@jeffcannata.bsky.social
A meta-analysis of 117 longitudinal studies found that screen use, particularly gaming, was linked to future socioemotional difficulties for children 6-10 years old at baseline.

This is what every AI company wants to be, the largest source of cheep labour in the world, basically tax free. That is what these insane stock valuations are about.
This really struck me. If Uber were legally acknowledged as an employer, then it would be the biggest employer in the world, with over 9,000,000 employees globally. Think about how many taxes, wages, and protections are being lost b/c of their intransigence.
