Interesting seeing MD come up so often in the replies, ime Maryland is totally sensible. I cannot deal with the drivers in Iowa (and the rural midwest more generally) who prefer to follow the rules of decorum over the rules of the road.
coming up with a new idea called "driving like shit olympics". no more bland, unprovable statements like "california drivers are the WORST" allowed. whichever state wins every 4 years gets a moonshot-sized public transit investment to get those fuckers off the road

Powerful thread. I've found this to be a difficult part of advising students. How to counsel demands for accountability. Encourage them to speak up and getting "absolutely destroyed"? Encourage them to keep silent and all that entails? You can't just tell them to thread a needle just right.
I was extremely naive in my twenties and early thirties, took people very much at their word when it came to values, and absolutely destroyed my mental health (and my career) thinking I could publicly demand accountability and survive it whole.

The Politico story on UATX is so stupid. The mean idea is that UATX wasn't actually a conservative project from the start, but unfortunately turned into one. It's opened its doors in 2024! It didn't fail to live up to it's vision; people were just duped into believing what they wanted.
