Especially heart-warmed by this comment: "Johnson closes by returning to analogy as method, emphasizing that comparisons rewrite the past they cite and reorganize what later historians can see.... 1/2

If you can't paint, take classes, spend some time, learn to paint, don't use genAI to do a weird bullshit facsimile of art and then whine when everyone says it's bad and not creative and destroying the planet and empowering fascists, because we're right and you're wrong.

This is, from a historical point of view, insane:

New: Former Texas A&M lecturer Melissa McCoul is suing the university months after Texas A&M fired her over a gender identity lesson.

McCoul alleges that administrators knowingly violated her free speech and due process rights to appease political critics.

Wait--Simone Weil, too!?!? Why is Feb 3 not an official holiday?
I was today years old when I found out Stuart Hall and E P Thompson shared a February 3 birthday. Rest in power.

This was only about two time-lapsed minutes of the Alex Pretti memorial ride in Minneapolis today. I'd guess there were at least 5x more people there than this, and probably significantly more than that. Absolutely mind blowing love and support showing up on bikes today.

Legalize Plato!

Top-down decisions to censor, cancel, or flag classes at Texas A&M do not protect students. It harms their growth.

Brian Evans, @texasaaup.bsky.social president, believes in the students’ ability to stand up for themselves, and for the futures of their university and of Texas.

They are not being slick about it, because they do not think you will (or even can) quit using the platform.

Counterinsurgency narratives are first and foremost a means to justify targeting civilians for violence. The regime declares protesters it murders guilty simply by virtue of their death, and uses talk of imaginary "sympathetic populations" to erase the actual demands of the people protesting
MAGA military geniuses are talking about Minnesota protestors like they are the Iraqi insurgency, the Taliban, and the Viet Cong all rolled into one.

For @jacobinmag.bsky.social, Barry Trachtenberg criticizizes the moral abdication of @historians.org re. Palestine. Its leaders' decision to twice veto resolutions condemning scholasticide in Gaza "is not merely disappointing. It is antidemocratic and morally evasive."

Historians Have a Duty to Condemn Scholasticide in Gaza
An overwhelming majority of American Historical Association members voted earlier this month to condemn scholasticide in Gaza. AHA leaders overruled members to block the measure, opting for cowardice ...

Wow. Some straight up BS from @historians.org Stay morally bankrupt on Palestine if you insist. But take NZD’s name out of your mouths as you do it.
Reading @historians.org's letter to members justifying the council veto re Gaza. They say they're doing it cuz of the AHA's *mission* - but at the linked page, there's a pic of Natalie Zemon Davis.

NZD was supportive of every res on Palestine!

The downfall of IU as a top public research university is the real story, not IU’s pummeling of Miami.
While many of you are likely yelling "GO INDIANA!" or "GO MIAMI!" I'm yelling "GO AAUP and academic freedom!"
Wild that Indiana is going to finally win a national football championship in the year that IU’s leaders & the state’s government decided it was no longer a serious research university.
