Any dev studio caught using genAI permanently puts a target on themselves. They can never be trusted again and should be heavily scrutinized. We’re past the phase of experimenting with AI out of curiosity. Sandfall Interactive and Frontier Development have effectively poisoned their reputations.

The real problem for me is that there's now a huge question mark for the next game they put out: did they go back to using digital heroin because it's easy and they simply got better at erasing their evidence, or did they actually get shamed enough to not give legitimacy to the 'AI' industry?

Not enough people were mad about this. Too many people give them a pass because they’re an indie studio & it was a “placeholder”. ANY use of genAI should be shamed & discouraged, the placeholder is the only part we KNOW about. The fact they used it at all means we can’t trust the studio.

A programmer for Expedition 33 did indeed use generative AI art early as placeholder textures that they missed removing at launch.

This isn’t in my piece, as it wasn’t a good fit and isn’t new information. but it’s worth clarifying
