#poem
Untitled by Eli Belt

Open a pot of paint,
Add two pinches of flower petals,
Stir in toasted marshmallow memories,
Sip until you feel uncontrollable fits of laughter closely associated with jumping in piles of leaves.
Soak in the aromas and textures of autumn…

The whole poem is in photo.
A collage of 15 photos: red leaf tree, dawn just before sunrise with the silhouette of trees in 2 photos, a pile of colored leaves, the fiery fingers of orange, red, and purple sunset, white sheet ghosts dancing around in a circle, a pathway among the golden trees, two photos of water with leaves of gold, red, brown, orange floating in them, two dewy spiderwebs, an orange pumpkin spider climbing up a tree trunk, a yellow orange mushroom lying next to a red leaf with yellow veins, red leaf with yellow veins, a yellow tree in the woods. Argiope Aurantia with a tier of three faces piled on top of each other like Halloween masks clinging to a screen door, a tiny red mushroom with a white stem surrounded by leaves, an orange monarch butterfly with black stripes and white spots on a pile of leaves, a brown mushroom with only a cap sticking up out of the leaves and grass, a green katydid, a red dawn and silhouette of a tree, a crescent moon in a red and purple dawn sky, red and purple roped curtains of clouds at sunset, white towers of clouds in a blue sky, a community of yellow orange mushrooms, dewy spiderweb at dawn, yellow leafed tree, brown gilled mushroom,
and two dewy spiderwebs. Untitled by Eli Belt

Open a pot of paint,
Add two pinches of flower petals,
Stir in marshmallow toasted memories,
Sip until you feel uncontrollable fits of laughter closely associated with jumping in piles of leaves.
Soak in the aromas and textures of autumn,
From the crunch of leaves to the moist Nirvana in each mouth watering bite of pumpkin spice bread to the foggy dew that covers spiderwebs and delight their artistic flair displays.
This is the most perfect time of the year.

This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.

I am not fearful — I am fearless.

We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights..

Happy #Invertober day 2!

Red-banded leafhopper (Graphocephala coccinea)
Digital drawing of a Red-banded leafhopper (Graphocephala coccinea) perched on a branch amid fanciful looking yellow flowers that reflect the same color as the insect's head, belly, and legs. The insect has strikingly colorful wings in a swirly pattern of turquoise and deep pink.

It's true! I started when I was 50 and for the first few years (yes, years) my art was pretty simplistic, but what kept me going was learning new things all the time and seeing those small improvements. There is real joy to be found in working away at something and getting better at it.

Nature notes: shrews are very fond of sketching their surroundings and can often be seen carrying a small cushion with them to sit on whilst drawing.

(And yes I did make a teeny tiny sketch book and teeny tiny pencil with actual lead in it - come and see at GNCCF Manchester 16-19Oct )

I’m glad you were both able to do that. It had to do you both some good.

It's October and that means it's the perfect season for a little horror with original illustrations and plenty of unsettling events... 👀

It's here!

Roadkill is out in the world. I can't in good conscience recommend it to all readers. A sad and angry book. 90% of the animal characters are dead at the outset & the humans don't fare much better. But if you're in the mood for an unconventional eco-horror experience, links in comments!
Book cover for Roadkill by Helen Whistberry showing a bird, raccoon, and snake skeleton sprawled across a dark asphalt highway with yellow dotted line. The title is in large yellow letters that have blood streaming down them and out onto the road and animals. There is a dark and stormy sky in the background. Black and white illustration of the head and neck of a howling wolf in profile. Its mouth is wide open and a dark liquid is trickling from its mouth, snout, and eye.

In a #box
sat a cat
contemplating
this & that.
In a corner
sat a mouse,
thinking
not enough room for
a cat & a mouse
in this house.
In walks me
staring at the cat
while pointing at the mouse,
this shouldn’t be.
I whistled for my roo,
who ate the mouse
& chased the cat.
Time to scat.

Poem, "October"
(c) constance lee menefee

I know
the roses have gone
but for a curled crisp
afterthought
but
I go outside
anyway
in the sharp air
blunted with early sunlight
and my breath
puffs softly
white
like pollen
promising
bloom then fruit.

Anyone good at FOIs would be down to draft an FOI for everything the University of Alberta has about my “non-disciplinary leave”?

I have been a little bit under a rock and missed this *horrifying* action at U Alberta. The speed with which these kinds of attacks on freedom of expression are picking up in Canada is incredible - like movement that has finally hit the top of a hill and is racing down now.
