I’m teaching a course on data wrangling with R & the tidyverse for @stathorizons.bsky.social in January. Filled to the brim with ways to do the stuff you have to do before you can run any of your spiffy models and that often breezily gets glossed over even though it’ll take up 90% of your time.

My daughter’s school bus was delayed this morning because armed ICE agents, some masked, were in the middle of 15th Ave in Cedar Riverside. So why wouldn’t ICE just get out of the way when the bus came? Perhaps they were busy harassing Somali-Americans, who are overwhelmingly citizens. But... (1/4)

Nobody should call these "erroneous" arrests. It's not happening by accident. Flooding cities with poorly trained ICE thugs to harass and racially profile is the entire point.

an afternoon snow reveals like nothing else which transportation is “resilient” and which is a hidden burden
Thank you to everyone out operating and maintaining our @metrotransitmn.bsky.social transit system—my commute home was quick, safe, and stress-free in spite of the snow.

new pedestrian volume sampling method just dropped
someone from the town came by to fix the sidewalk the water company had torn up, they poured the cement, smoothed it, moved on to the next one and within like three minutes someone had full on walked through it

Just watched a small murder of crows demonstrate how to alert their community when a predator is in their midst.

Five or six of them are following a hawk around the neighborhood, cawing whenever it moves.

Makes you think.

interesting read on waymo. tldr: robot cars are known to be dangerous during the regular course of their duties, but fixing it might slow drivers down so it won’t be done www.changinglanesnewsletter.com/p/the-death-...

I want everyone to flip out over this proposal to give the mayor a $46,000 raise. I completely agree that our elected officials should be well paid. But people tear their hair out over council pay, so we need to bring that same energy to this one.

i have been asserting that if the robot cars are truly safe (follow the letter of driving law) people will hate riding in them
It is too early to claim that AVs will certainly lead to safety improvements. Maybe they will! But I’ve noticed Waymos driving more aggressively when I’m in one. This story suggests that may be fairly widespread. It’s clear that laws are not strictly followed all the time. Gift link.

If one feels so strongly that AVs are necessary because driving by people is too unsafe, they should take that idea further and support reducing the need to drive in all or most circumstances. We don’t need AVs to make safety improvements, and we shouldn’t get stuck on tech fixes. Gift link
