You don’t want to hear the story
of my life, & anyway
I don’t want to tell it, I want to listen

to the enormous waterfalls of the sun.

And anyway it’s the same old story -
a few people just trying,
one way or another,
to survive.

Mostly, I want to be kind...

~ Mary Oliver

This is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and considered to be the first person to write a computer programme which was for Babbage's Analytical Machine. She died in 1842
In her honour, today is Ada Lovelace Day and is all about encouraging women and girls in mathematics, science and engineering.

What if
The oasis
We dream of
Is still
Here
Under all
Our fear
That ricochets
Like bullets
Across the
Tall grass
Prairie
And despite
The dangers
We make
And face
The buffalo
Still stomp
Remembering
The rhythm
We used to hear

THE TALLGRASS PRAIRIE PRESERVE
You stand at the south edge of the largest unplowed, protected tract which remains of the 142 million acres of tallgrass prairie grassland that once stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
Today, less than ten percent still exists, found mostly in the Flint and Osage Hill regions of Kansas and Oklahoma.
In an increasingly crowded and noisy world, what you see is an oasis of space and silence. Here you can experience the same beautiful vistas that greeted the earliest human hunters and gatherers many thousands of years ago.
This area is indeed a rational treasure. Please treat it with respect.
For additional information about this preserve and its unique history, visit the preserve headquarters gift shop and nature room, another ten miles north on this road. This preserve is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy, a private, nonprofit organization.

Nothing in the world pleases her so well as solitude. She is happiest alone in the country. She loves rambling alone in her woods. She loves going out by herself at night. She loves hiding from callers. She loves walking among her trees & musing.
