there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

yeah I built an AI that hangs out on your porch and drinks a six pack for you so you can write regexes at work

Ok so there’s a battle I guess, let’s get that out of the way, but also now for 20 pages on how to do surgery and stop the captain eating rare wildlife (you cannot)

I love them.

It’s a material reality that right now the AI tech bubble is holding up the empire. It increasingly powers all commerce, and is central to the most invasive surveillance apparatus the world has ever seen. Predictive analytics trained on our data have allowed billionaires to track us like wildlife.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

The railways are never going to break even. At best London and the SE plus two main lines might subsidise the rest. But there will always be some subsidy.

I really don't know what to do about a situation where a plurality of the group that (rightly!) takes up most government spending thinks that it is unrepresented in politics.

Enshoritification is a terrible terrible word.

Call it demographic collapse

(Also I am available to move here if they’ll have me doing anything but teaching English (they will not))

Wife rented a car to visit Mt Aso and we tootled around the caldera all day
Mt Aso caldera, it’s a big boy.

It’s got several smaller active volcanos ringing the super volcano caldera

The British passport intro blurb is one of the few things that makes me feel patriotic, it’s just so pompously flamboyant and protective, so it’s been a wild ride watching successive governments make it mean absolutely fuck all over the years

New wording; “In trouble abroad? Your fucked mate”
His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.'

I’m a millennial, yes we know there is no such thing. As such the lack of work life balance just pisses me off

I want to be doing things outside the office as much as possible.

Instead lack of secure housing and money means I’m a forerunner of hustle culture or sitting worrying about the future

In Nagaski? Eat at Yubatotofunomise Umenohana Merukanagasakiten

(Mostly) tofu and soy based full on set meals. Really unexpected find, it’s tucked away on the second floor of a mall and the tables are in a labyrinth of meeting room style private alcoves.
Tofu served 3 ways (2 types of miso skewers, and a crispy chewy fried tofu)

folks we need to bring back forums. social media doesn't work. forums didn't work either but they were funnier and had more concentrated giant flameouts
