Yes, and the Patriot Act. It's long seemed evident that security is a great excuse to consolidate power at the cost of liberty.

The war on terror enabled the worst excesses of our country's power and laid the groundwork for our modern security state which may soon be turned on its own people.

Our lifestyles are propped up by exploiting cheap labor. Even if we wanted made in America, most could not afford the cost.

The modern American life is out of balance, unsustainable, and built on sand.

@boycottcitizens.bsky.social pointed out on another post that a lot of GEO Group and Core Civic shares are actually held by institutions like state pension funds:

Take it one step further, ban for-profit private detention facilities and prisons.

The power to deprive people of their liberty should be reserved to the state through due process.

The profit motives of private prisons creates perverse incentives antithetical to a free and just society.

Appreciate you sharing this information. I think it's true that most people have no clue where their retirement or pension funds are actually invested.

It's one of the reasons why I think it's problematic for our retirement system to be so heavily tied to Wall Street.
