2/3: Local “shark nannies” are now caring for Jelly with minimal human conditioning. Once she’s grown, she’ll be tagged and released into the protected waters of Raja Ampat as part of the StAR (Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery) Project.

First time going to Sitka and tidepooling !! I grew up on white sandy beaches, so tidepooling just wasn't really a thing, but I'm excited to go more often~ Will post a few a day till they're gone, starting with sea anemones~ 🌊

A couple of pics of a pair from a blackwater dive in Balayan Bay, Anilao. I think this is a phyllosoma (the larval stage of a lobster) riding a purple-striped jelly which is really too small for it... ID very tentative in both cases though!

f you’ve never heard of the Circular Seabird Economy, it’s the idea that seabirds feed on marine prey, and at their colonial nesting sites, primarily on islands, they deposit significant amounts of those nutrients (mostly in the form of guano) onto land.

🐌 I guess National Snail Day is a good time to share the overwhelming diversity of •pelagic gastropods• we saw in the Gulf of California, Mexico, last month. We used scuba and trawls on the R/V Sally Ride, supported by NSF grants and expertise of Brad Seibel and Amy Maas. 🦑🧪
