I didn’t see the Northern Lights on 11/11, but I did see the neon signs inside Lioni’s Italian Heros shop in South Brooklyn and I think that’s a pretty close second. Similar color palette.

So proud of my Tin House baddie @sumaiya.bsky.social for fighting for this story and doing a public reading for Brooklyn and the world last August.

Now everyone can read it online, thanks to @vol1brooklyn.bsky.social 🩵

The last push happened as my infant son became a toddler, I held down a full time tech job, and worked towards a draft of an unrelated book project. It sounds impressive until you consider I may have not done any of these things well at all. Anyways, to eventual publication!
Just got proofs for an academic article that’s somehow been 8 years in the making. Slow and steady work, full of second-guessing and double-checking and anxiety. Many research trips, conference presentations, revisions—all boiled down into 23 pages. How do I feel about it? At this moment, tired. 😅

How I love to read Chee. And Chee on the city I love and our new mayor is just what I needed to remember what happened here a week ago, and remember all the reasons to be grateful to experience this era in NYC.

Zohran Mamdani quoting Mario Cuomo in his acceptance speech is nasty work and I love it. The Sicilian in me bows to his killer instinct.

More than anything, Mamdani has killed the “corporate democrat political avatar” as a force in elections . If you can’t be authentic, don’t run

I have actually not seen Mamdani give a formal speech and what I’ll say is that unlike so many of his peers he is not trying to mimic anyone in his delivery. He is simply being himself and it is very effective.
I’ve been interested in political speeches for as long as I can remember. I’ve listened to nearly every inaugural and major address, and I’ve given tons of public speeches myself.

Zohran’s talent in this arena ranks among the best. He’s damn good. Hella good. Remarkably good.

Crazy to watch.

reminder to all my trans friends that a man who campaigned with this much support and love for us just destroyed the most machine politician to ever exist in spite of all odds. turns out vocally caring about us is a winning strategy!!
UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
