A 200-person homeless encampment in Gainesville, GA, is being cleared this week. Many of those living in tents have jobs but can't afford rent.

One woman estimated she's been forced to move 20 times. "There's a lot of people who get checks that don't have enough money to get places," she said.

New, by me, on why the City of Atlanta should not extend its TAD (TIF) districts and how it will hurt, not help, low-income Atlantans.

(Bracing for a new round of ad hominem attacks from Mayor Dickens or his staff/lobbyists, but I am traveling so may not see it.)

🧵1/N
Extending gentrifying Atlanta’s tax districts for 25 years makes little sense
Atlanta's Tax Allocation Districts (TADs) have run their course and we should find more novel ways to spur prosperity, build housing and assist low-income residents.

Trump is now going after Jack Smith.

You know who seems safe from his retribution: Merrick Garland. Because he did JACK SHIT. Trump not being pissed at him is, low key, an indictment of his entire tenure.

This is yet another reminder that the "you can just walk around with your papers and be fine!" is a lie: the cops routinely claim whatever documentation you provide is invalid

It's racism all the way down

I found it pretty charming to learn that after Roger Taney died, sitting lawmakers called his death a "victory for liberty and the Constitution," suggested that he was probably burning in hell, and joked (?) that they'd rather hang him in effigy than do literally anything to honor his memory
Roger Taney’s Contemporaries Hated Him As Much As You Probably Do
Ordinarily, members of Congress do not publicly suggest that recently deceased Supreme Court justices are burning in hell. But Roger Taney was no ordinary Supreme Court justice.

(It does not help that Pope John Paul II canonized Escrivá as a saint in 2002, in an absolutely terrible decision that is still causing repercussions, but again: I'm trying to keep this to the absolute basics. As usual for one of these threads, I swear this is the short version.)

No, really. It was founded by Josemaria Escrivá in 1928 in Spain. Escrivá was closely tied to Franco's regime and was known to praise Hitler, deny the Holocaust, and support authoritarian dictatorships worldwide. Opus Dei members are tied to some of the worst human rights abuses of the 20th century.

Okay! This is going to take a while so I had to finish some stuff first, but: Why Da Pope Fucking Up Opus Dei Is A Huge Fucking Deal: a thread
Gimme an hour or two and then I'll explain why this is a "holy fucking shit" moment!

BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV is set to effectively disband Opus Dei in the coming weeks.

This would be the most sweeping internal reform of his pontificate — and a dramatic continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy.
NEW: Pope Leo Set To Break Up Opus Dei
If Pope Leo does indeed approves a plan that effectively dissolves Opus Dei’s structure, it would be the most significant internal action of his short pontificate to date.

For those of you keeping score, 18-22 year-old students calling for an end to slaughter in Gaza are so racist they need to be expelled or deported, but 24-35 year-olds celebrating Hitler, rape, and, um, racism are just kids being kids so chill.

Also, racism is over so no need for Voting Right Act.

That’s $5 billion more than the entire annual USAID budget. All to one country. To rescue one friend of the president’s.
Trump found another $20 BILLION to give to Argentina, totaling their bailout to $40 BILLION.

Yet we can’t afford to prevent millions of Americans from losing their healthcare.

Shame.

The current PSC has never faced a rate hike they didn't approve or a dirty power plant they didn't greenlight (even though clean energy is now cheaper).

Today is World Homeless Day, and after years reporting on this crisis, I'll just say: homelessness is neither inevitable nor intractable. It's the result of choices—political, economic, moral—that can be unmade.

And this: how we treat the unhoused is a bellwether for the violence we will tolerate.

One of the facts that should be mentioned is immigrants in the US without legal status still pay taxes in all sorts of ways, including the Medicare payroll tax, so it wouldn’t be “free health care.”
President Donald Trump and other high-ranking Republicans claim Democrats forced the government shutdown fight because they want to give free health care to immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Here’s a closer look at the facts:
FACT FOCUS: Democrats did not shut down the government to give health care to 'illegal immigrants'
This is false. Democrats say they are pushing for the inclusion of key health care provisions in the next congressional spending package.
