OTD in 1939, the BBWAA held a special election at the Winter Meetings and voted 36-year-old Lou Gehrig to the Hall of Fame—a mere 221 days after the Iron Horse played his final game. The only other BBWAA special election in history occurred months after Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash.
