Not only are they not willing to, I suspect they are very much enjoying the very fact that they are lawless thugs. Gang leaders running protection rackets don't go out themselves to beat up people who don't pay. They send their minions.

In 1931, American journalist Dorothy Thompson secured what many considered an impossible interview -- a rare audience with Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany's rapidly ascending Nazi party, at the Kaiserhof Hotel in Berlin. For one of her three permitted questions, Thompson asked Hitler a direct challenge: "When you come to power, will you abolish the constitution of the German Republic?"
Hitler's response was shockingly direct: "I will get into power legally. I will abolish this parliament and the Weimar constitution afterward. I will found an authority-state, from the lowest cell to the highest instance; everywhere there will be responsibility and authority above, discipline and obedience below." Thompson believed he was telling the truth about his dictatorial ambitions, yet she couldn't fathom that he would be successful. The very idea struck her as absurd: "Imagine a would-be dictator setting out to persuade a sovereign people to vote away their rights."

About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages

I wish I knew. The USA is either headed for (already in?) a far-right dictatorship, or will shortly be engaged in a civil war. Either scenario bodes very ill for the rest of the world as well as those directly impacted. He's of low intellect but with a lot of animal cunning despite everything else.

Quite. Apart from the prescription and over-the-counter stuff that might actually help a bit, they're full to the rafters with homeopathic nothing pills, miracle skin creams, diet potions etc. But if it's that or see them go bust, keep selling the ground concrete, just not to me.

Agreed. Cassandra foretold the fall of Troy, but that was just one City State. This could cause a global pandemic worse even than Covid19 if science scepticism is combined with the 1st world's love of global travel.

I think Trump lives in a past of his own imagination and a present of his own making. He has no concept of future. For him, life will continue in an endless present of games of golf and function room dinners where everyone wears evening dress and pays through the nose for 3rd rate catering.

Peter Thiel has actually been caught saying that the only way to effectively control a population (and so protect his personal wealth) is to use religion. We're seeing that in the USA, but it seems to be bleeding through into the UK too.
