"Many of you who covered me ... were salivating at the thought that Eric would go to jail for 33 years. So don't start asking me about what I think about [Letitia James]: I want to know, what did y'all think about when my life was destroyed in this city. And I wish I had a mic so I can drop it."

Billionaire-to-supervillain pipeline
Since the pandemic, he has mostly lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he has bought up numerous parcels of land. He said that he wasn't sure how many days he spends each year in San Francisco, but that he is never in one place for more than a day or two.

I'm at the scene where ICE abducted multiple people from Lincoln and Foster this morning.

A WGN producer was among the people taken, allegedly because she was among a group of bystanders who tried to intervene. ICE agents hit this car while making their getaway.

adding alt text bc we all know that interview was rough to watch, but my god the background on it

(via www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...)
A few days before the taping, Colbert's producers held a prep call with the candidates and their aides. The sample questions covered basic political topics, such as the meaning of democratic socialism. Right before the candidates went onstage, the producers appeared in the greenroom and said that they wanted to go over a few more questions. Earlier that day, a group of prominent Jewish figures, including Elisha Wiesel, the son of Elie Wiesel, had sent a letter to Colbert demanding that he grill Mamdani on his views of Israel. According to people who were in the room, one of the producers suggested a "thumbs-up or thumbs-down" segment:
"Thumbs-up or thumbs-down: Hamas. Thumbs-up or thumbs-down: a Palestinian state."
Mamdani's face dropped. "I just couldn't believe what was happening," he told me. "That a genocide could be distilled into a late-night game." His aides were incensed. "You have the first Muslim candidate for mayor in the history of New York," Zara Rahim, a senior adviser to Mamdani, told one of the producers. "You don't want to ask him a question about that?" (CBS did not respond to a request for comment.) In the end, the game didn't happen, but Colbert did ask Mamdani whether he believed that Israel had the right to exist. "Yes, like all nations, I believe it has a right to exist," he said. "And a responsibility also to uphold international law."

Parlays have become incredibly popular, with many betting apps encouraging these high-stakes multi-leg bets. But as legs are added, the chance of winning drops faster than the growth of the potential payout - which means sportsbooks have the advantage. Explore the math and and try your own bets:
Americans can’t stop betting parlays. Sportbooks are cashing in.
As betting booms, parlays are accounting for an increasing share of the money wagered on sports, according to a Washington Post analysis of state data.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Why does Stephen Miller talk like he's one of the villains on Adventure Time?

Every time he does an interview, I am half expecting him to announce that he has finally captured Princess Bubblegum and plans to force her to be his new wife.

I mean, the GOP _is_ lying as well--undocumented immigrants can't receive Medicaid--but no one should struggle to afford healthcare just because they don't have the right passport!
ethanscorey.bsky.social
I'm not sure accusations of healthcare are the same as accusations of pet-eating... The "healthcare for illegal aliens" line seems like it's more about attacking public goods that just happen to benefit outgroups.

It's like the cities that shut down public pools instead of desegregating them.

Smart move by two young upstate NY reporters: they filed a FOIA for body cameras worn by the sheriff’s deputies at an ICE raid. These are almost always civil raids so there’s no ongoing criminal investigation that would require that footage to stay confidential. Replicable by any media outlet.
