When I first started at the Sun-Times, Mary Mitchell told me, “it’s good that you’re here.”

Mary was always available to talk about things, and encourage staffers — especially Black reporters.

A few weeks ago, me and my kid were in the dry cleaners when she saw one of the employees working the sowing machine.

My kid mentions to them how my mom taught her how to sow by hand.

The worker asks my kid if she’d like her own sowing machine.
