They were made to be expendable. Obedient. To free the human worker forever.

They're not what they were made to be.

Adler, a human-dog hybrid, has lost all hope of escaping the retraining facility he calls home. Finn, a captured feral, may just change his mind.

a moodboard featuring images of: three people cuddling intimately, three people holding hands in the dark, a dimly lit hallway with illuminated eyes looking in from the darkness, someone sitting at the bottom of a stairwell in despair, sharp smiling teeth, someone's arm in medical restraints, bloodied hands, a paper sign saying "OPEN YOUR EYES THIS IS THE REVOLUTION" and an image of sharp teeth that says "LET ME BARE MY TEETH FOR YOU". The text on top of the images reads "THE MERCY OF GODS meets DOGS OF WAR". "HUMAN-ISH", "an adult sci-fi dystopia about oppression, passion, and letting people in so you can all break out"

Quick snippet from The King in The Mountain today. I can't believe I'm nearly at 70k on the first draft. :')

A screenshot from Scrivener. It reads:

"“What is your specialty?” Silas asks the next day. He and Nomsa are together alone again, across from one another at her desk. She is bent over a textbook and he is bent over yet another quiz. Silas hadn’t failed to notice that the line behind him was even shorter this morning.

A long moment passes, and he wonders if she heard him. Finally, as if coming to some sort of conclusion she hums and says, “Time magic.”

“Time magic,” he repeats. Every book on magic he’s ever read — which admittedly isn’t many, but a few — has included time magic as a footnote at most. For a long time it was strictly theoretical, and then sometime just before The Expansion some mages started making their stopwatches pause on command. A whole lifetime of work, to make a second hand stutter. “Really?”"

Part of being a fiction author is experiencing life. Whether you do that vicariously by reading other books or watching TV, or if you go out and try new things on a regular basis, what you experience informs your writing.

Step away from the keyboard regularly and refuel.

What do you do when you meet a bunch of people living in the woods and you're SURE they're a vampire coven, but you can't prove it?

You make an excuse to come back later so you can interrogate them some more, of course! (Spoiler alert: it works.)

A screenshot from Scrivener. It reads: "In the heat of the moment, in a single impulse he lets run wild out of desperation and fear, Silas pretends to miss his footing on the single step down into the foyer, and lets his pen tumble out of his limp hand. “I’m so clumsy, sometimes,” he says, “Goodness.”

“Careful now,” Ansel’s expression is a curated calm. He looks at Silas for a moment too long, but then pulls the front door open. “Have a good evening.”

“Good evening, my apologies again for the trouble,” Silas says over his shoulder.

The door shuts. Distinctly, he hears the deadbolt turn."

I strongly suggest focusing on your neighborhood when it comes to political action/mutual aid because 1. Actual tangible change happens on the local level and 2. If you look at this from a national perspective, if you absorb every evil currently happening on a mass scale, you will fry your brain

The most recent exception to the cishet love story rule is Wendell and Emily Wilde because I'm thoroughly enjoying reading them right now.

Also: absolutely NO judgement to people who include any of these things in their works. It's just not my cup of tea.

A cishet love story at the forefront. There's SO MUCH of it out there and I just don't personally enjoy it 99% of the time.

I'm also not much for writing sexuality/gender crisis as part of the story and I almost never write homo/transphobia (WIPs are all queernorm). Same reason.

Let's do the flip side of yesterday. What's something you don't think you'll ever bring yourself to include in your writing? How come? #WritingPrompt

To be a writer, you only have to do one thing: write.

Not break into a big magazine. Not publish a bestseller. Not get an extravagant book tour.

Struggling with discouragement? Rejection? Bad reviews? These are normal. They don't disqualify us.

If you put words to the page, then we are peers.

I keep exploring human-adjacent beings (dog-human hybrids, vampires, magic users reviled as subhuman) and exploring what it means to be human through them. What makes a monster and what makes a man?

Oh, and everybody is bi. All of them. Idk how that keeps happening, but it does.

Silas (who is equal parts vampire-obsessed and hemophobic) having to give blood to the coven he's living with for the first time is the *definition* of pressure. :')
A screenshot from Scrivener. It reads:

“The night is young,” Ansel says, “And I think it’s high time you started to fulfill your purpose here.”

Silas glances down at his notebook. He is at maximum five pages deep in it, but already it feels heavier in his hands. “I’ve already taken plenty of notes,” he says.

“No, no, your purpose to us. This is an exchange, remember? You take notes and never publish them. We harvest your blood.”

The contents of Silas’ stomach turn to cold, swirling jelly. “I — yes, of course.” That was the agreement. Out of desperation that it was his only option, Silas agreed.

Rourke, for the first time in the short time Silas has known him, immediately seems interested. He stands up off the wall, chin tipped up curiously.

Between the two of them, Silas suddenly feels much less like one of those intrepid anthropologists speaking with a different culture, and much much more like a cornered alley cat surrounded by dogs. “I — can I ask for only one at a time?”

“Of course,” Ansel says, “It’s only proper.”

The door slams shut. Two voices clamor up the hallway — one woman and one, distinctly, being Nicholas’. Silas feels his blood pressure spike.

“We have to accept generative AI eventually!”

Honey, I will write my books in increments as zines if I have to.

The only AI I will accept is an artificially sentient robot author who suffers from imposter syndrome and cries about hating their draft.
