A straight shooter with upper management written all over him
Solid 20/20. Although rotary phone, record player, and typewriter were outliers for me as my family was fairly tech-forward. I think I used a rotary phone at my grandparents' house and I didn't use a typewriter for anything serious other than one of my college applications!

I was reflecting this morning that I've actually only seen 3 of his movies: The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and The American President. But one of those inspired my entire career, so he still gets top marks from me.

Can anyone recommend a good book on the history of Native Americans in Virginia? (Or the SE United States, if Virginia is too specific.) I know shamefully little about it. I've found what look like good titles for Native history nationwide, but would love something that focuses on where I live.

Finally admitting that the experiment to return to the Dell Digital Jukebox MP3 player for car music is over. One must eventually come to grips with the fact that having a standalone desktop computer from 2009 running Windows XP solely for the purpose of putting new songs on it is idiotic.

The check-out clerk at the store didn't recognize a celery root and asked me what it was used for, and in describing this I uttered the phrase "a vegetarian version of mashed potatoes."

A vegetarian version. Of mashed potatoes.

Didn't hit me until the parking lot.

Controversial take: it should be both illegal and a Geneva Convention violation to play the same Christmas carol twice in a row (by different artists) in the grocery store

The Sixth Sense in my college theater; projector died on the transition to the last reel. Never came back on. Didn't see the end or know about the twist for several more years.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Finally saw my first dark-eyed junco of the season on the back deck! Winter may now officially commence.

🎶 I’ll be home for Christmas🎶
🎶You can plan on me🎶
🎶Please have snow and mistletoe🎶
🎶and…wait, what the hell is that on the tree🎶
🎶no really, is it like the ghost of a clown🎶
🎶where the clown went through a meat grinder🎶
🎶but that still doesn’t explain the…nipple? 🎶

Really glad my spouse explained to me why there is a bigass partially smashed pumpkin in our trash can because... that's a bigass pumpkin! And I would have had Some Questions.

Requiem for a Dream. I found it to be incredibly well made (directed, written, acted) but just too shattering to put myself through again.
Never mind movies you’ve watched multiple times, name a movie you’ve watched once and would never watch again.

I genuinely can't think of a single movie that came out after 2015 that I've seen even 3 times. A couple I've seen twice.

50 times... I don't know about literally 50, but Heat, The Hunt for Red October, and The Empire Strikes Back are probably the only ones where I'm in the neighborhood.
seeing a movie 6 times is not hard mode smh that's basically true of every movie you owned pre 2005.

I wanna hear about the movies you've seen 50 times. or the movies you've seen 6 times that only came out post 2015

Just got email from Netflix blapping about their Warner Bros. acquisition. Quote: "...bringing some of the world’s most beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Casablanca, Game of Thrones..."

1) "most beloved" doing a lot of work there and
2) Casablanca? A "franchise"?

Welcome back to #FossilFriday!

Here is a Petoskey Stone which is Michigan's state stone. It is a colonial rugose coral known as Hexagonaria percarinata. This comes from the Middle Devonian (Givitian) Gravel Point Formation (Traverse Group). Each corallite that you see would have housed a polyp.

Somewhere in a Roman brickyard, around 1800 years ago, a fresh tile was drying ahead of firing - until a dog trotted straight across it.
Centuries later, the tile has made it into a museum: not because of an emperor, but thanks to one dog who accidentally walked his way into history.🧵1/2

I LOVED these as a kid. I was deliriously excited when I discovered other, similar, pretzel chips years later as an adult, which filled the echoing void in my soul left by the discontinuation of Mr. Phipps.
Mr. Phipps Pretzel Chips (1991-circa 1998): Essentially round, flat pretzels, these snack chips were part of the fleet of "Mr. Phipps" cracker/chip hybrids from Nabisco. Available in variants such as Original, Low Salt, and Sesame
