Ah. For me, the process is different. I have vague ideas that I sometimes have to beat into shape a little, and theory is one of the hammers I sometimes use for that.

Eventually, I decided that music theory is just a language, and it's up to me to decide what to say and how to say it in that language. And also, knowing the language doesn't mean I'm somehow limited to saying pleasant things with it. For instance:

Four bars of a piece of symphonic death metal I'm working on. Flutes and Oboes are playing parallel descending chromatic lines, alternating between quarter-notes and pairs of eighth-notes. Clarinets and Bassoons are playing parallel ascending chromatic lines, alternating between quarter-notes and pairs of eighth-notes but opposing the flutes and oboes, in a kinda textbook example of fourth-species counterpoint (if the textbook were written by Schoenberg, or a martian). The two electric guitar lines are playing slow power chords, but as above, they're playing at odds with each other. The two trumpets are playing short little blasts in third harmony, but with an occasional diminished third (i.e. a second) creeping in, and the strings are playing the same lines as the trumpets. In contrast with the rest of the music, the drums are in eight-note triplets.

A lot of music theory went into the creation of this song. That doesn't mean most people won't hear it and think it's utter noise.

There are great acts of kindness, and small ones.

I hope to never need to hide fugitives in my attic or basement.

For now, I'm kind to people who need shopping carts, restaurant waitstaff, housekeeping at hotels, and more... because this kindness is small, but it still matters.

Years ago, I met an (now retired) audio editor of Amadeus!

It was at work. My rookie was happy to sell him a mobile. I was honored to meet him. He was delighted that I approached his level of music nerdery. My rookie... wished him luck on his music career.

Her entire channel is insane and brilliant. I'm not nearly as passionate about food as she is, so for me, it feels at times like she's speaking a language I only barely understand.

The bluesky account for US Homeland Security, which has existed for four days.
