I talked to Lexie Helgerson about her documentary AGE GROUP WINNER and her father, who once held a world record by running (more than) a marathon a week for an entire year
Running on legacy: A filmmaker's journey to understand her record-breaking father

TRAIN DREAMS is out in limited theatrical release today. It will be on Netflix in a couple of weeks, but here's the thing: If you are at all able to, you really should see it on a big screen. You will not regret it.

Train Dreams Is a Staggering Work of Art
Netflix is releasing one of the best films of the year but please, for the love of God, don’t watch this masterpiece on your phone.

I was shown this in an intro film class in college and the two things I remember are how much our professor talked about Robert Mitchum’s butt and also how much the movie just knocked my socks off.
Watching Our of the Past. So much beauty, in the actors' faces & bodies as well as in the photography & staging (as in a fistfight that plays out partly in the shadows combatants cast on a wall). Very adult in its understanding of attraction and how one choice can trap you for life.

As someone who spent 7 years on NPR's digital desk rewriting/editing radio stories for the website, this is incredibly disappointing. I understand the financial strains they are under post-rescission, but this is not the way.
"Last week, NPR’s leadership proposed testing the use of artificial intelligence to produce digital versions of radio stories, to make the middle of the editorial process more efficient."

Please DM/email/signal me if you know something about this!

Another day, another game of “Who said it: Labour, Republicans, or Democrats?”

(I sometimes have to go three or four posts deep in a thread to find the answer.)

I tried to walk a fine line on this topic. I don't want people panicking in the streets about having their SSRIs taken away. But I do want people to realize that we may already be in the "Colin Powell at the UN" stage of this potential war.

I, for one, am pretty damn troubled by it all.
Pretty important show this week, to be brutally honest.
It's about whether the U.S. government will take away your antidepressants.
Upshot: they absolutely want to. Will they? Well... not YET.
Don't panic. But pay attention. War may be coming.

Maybe not yet but the fact that it’s an issue is reason to learn a lot more and fast.

I grew up with the idea that ABBA was “bad” (not my parents’ fault, just one of those stupid cultural misunderstandings) and then my middle school friend-turned-college roommate made me listen to ABBA GOLD and I said, “wait, what the fuck, this is amazing”
Anyone who says they don’t like ABBA… I just feel sorry for them

third, you say this like Nile Rogers, infamously of the disco band Chic, doesn’t think ABBA are brilliant. i have video evidence of this. also watch this if you want to get your mind blown by how ABBA invented modern pop music

There are so many Diane Keaton performances to remember, but a lot of people haven't seen Reds, and A) my God, see it, it is a masterpiece and B) her performance as Louise Bryant is one of the bravest, toughest, least sympathy-courting pieces of work by an American actress in the last 50 years.

Hello from Wichita
really need to emphasize the small cities part. i have mentioned this before, but you'll see people on facebook talk about charlottesville like its ridley scott's mogadishu
the amount of raw, unadulterated fear that many Americans have of even small cities is never going to stop being darkly hilarious to me

As someone who just started watching the series and thought, “this could be good but it could also go REALLY wrong,” I’m glad everyone’s letting me know I don’t need to continue.
the thing about alien earth is that peter pan is itself a very rich very fucked-up text and slapping its superficial trappings onto an already dense mythology without considering what those two stories actually mean to one another was an alarming sign from the jump

For your consideration: TRAIN DREAMS.
I think there are four certainties to get Best Picture nominations:

One Battle After Another
Sinners
Hamnet
Sentimental Value

The other six slots are WIDE open, and a lot will depend on box office/ public reception.
