If you follow our posts carefully you will see we are not seeking to stay more than 180 days . Moreover, life is not as simple as a binary choice. There are multiple examples of how personal interests transcend borders . 50 years of membership brought people and countries closer together .

We certainly do not blame the EU . This situation arises as a result of Brexit. As for granting of rights I would remind you that EU nationals enjoy greater and more liberal travel freedoms when visiting the UK than a UK national visiting the EU. The former benefit from a 6 month visa waiver.

We are not talking about settling in another country or living there full time or seeking naturalisation . These are separate issues and irrelevant to the changes we seek.

Totally irrelevant. As things stand to enter the EU some countries are annex 1 others annex 2 . More importantly almost 50 years of EU membership has seen lives develop that transcend borders.

And to some extent, I agree with Katy Lam that the Brexit withdrawal agreement does need to be reopened or added to.

But not to remove rights; instead:

➡️ To add to it and protect *more* rights for *more* people 🇪🇺🇬🇧.

It’s the human thing to do.

The devastating logical conclusion of this kind of argument is that anyone daring to cross a border (including British people) deserve to have all of their future national insurance rights or safety nets removed.

It’s why EU membership mattered.

France Visa Free also recognises that change could be achieved at a bilateral level or through changes to the way France operates its long stay visas.

France Visa Free exists to lobby the UK government to reopen negotiations with the EU to resolve the 90-in-180-day problem. If they are unwilling to rejoin the EU, the Single Market, or restore mutual Freedom of Movement, then we urge them to engage with the EU to find new visa-free solutions.

The 90 /180 rule & problem.
The 90-day allowance is a single, cumulative limit that is shared across a rolling 180-day period and all 29 Schengen countries and not a simple per-visit allowance. This restriction effectively limits continuous or frequent travel for third country nationals.

A passive visa where the award of the visa is simpler, quicker & less bureaucratic and more akin to a visa waiver would not break the Schengen Treaty. Indeed Sénatrice Berthet in France seemed to suggest as much in her call for change to the Visa Long Séjour Temporaire.

We recognise no Schengen country can unilaterally change Schengen rules but EU member states do have control over long stay visitor rules .Where visas exist their application process can be made more passive.

2. The problem isn’t always felt by everyone.

For example, those with residency in one EU country might not feel a problem with a 90 limit in all the other countries combined. Or they might be unknowingly exceeding the limit and it’s not detected because they live inside the Schengen zone.

3. The problem doesn’t affect every country

Some non EU countries don’t even get to use the 90-in-180-day Schengen visa waiver at all.

Their citizens need visas. Eg China.

4. Some countries have special agreements

Eg USA, New Zealand, Japan.

Some non EU countries have historic bilateral agreements with certain Schengen countries that means their citizens get additional 60 or 90 day allowances even if they’ve used up the Schengen 90 day allowance.
