For over a year now I’ve worked so hard and tried everything I could to avoid this. But I couldn’t save enough, so here we are.

I made a Gofundme. Depending on the outcome I will either hire an expensive immigration lawyer and give it one more try, or pack up and use the money to start over.

This is unfortunately now true for most creatives in most fields. Musicians, actors, writers. People who have achieved remarkable success in their fields - sold out tours, awards, charts - are working day jobs. It’s honestly depressing as shit.

Candace fucking Bushnell made $4 a word in the 1990s.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

When I was growing up my dad’s parents had a TV from the early 1970s with TWIST DIALS and no remote. You had to get up to change the channel. It worked perfectly otherwise.

In maybe 1997 or so my dad and uncle FINALLY convinced them to throw it out and get a TV with a remote.

How would you say universities like Emory fit into that infrastructure?
The fight against surveillance must include infrastructure that enables it. We can’t just oppose collection we must also fight storage, analysis, corporate relationships…

As someone writing a book on the history of government data storage and its harms, I’ll say that people in the past knew this!

ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

One of the funniest things is when academics I’ve never engaged with in my LIFE invent run-ins with me to impress their mediocre peers. “I replied to his call for papers and he yelled at me!”

I have never put out a single call for papers in my entire earthly existence, you sad little freak.

If we get out of this and the New York Times is still publishing at all, much less still a leading newspaper then we - the writers, the intellectuals, the thinkers, the teachers - will have failed miserably at one of the only things we’re supposed to excel at: discernment.

I’m doing my part.

So you’re saying a university can choose to eat into its endowment and say fuck you to outside money when they don’t want to do what the government says?

AMAZING NEWS EVERYONE. We can all stop feeling bad for all the universities “under attack.”
