Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) will not run for governor of the Buckeye state in 2026, he said Friday, sidestepping a contentious and likely pricey Democratic primary and paving the way for widely endorsed Democratic candidate Amy Acton to secure the party’s nomination. “After careful consideration, much prayer and reflection, and after long conversations with my family, my closest friends and advisors, I’ve made the decision not to run for governor in 2026,” Ryan said in a statement. The former representative had reportedly been preparing his team for a potential bid. His decision clears the candidate field for Acton, the former director of the Ohio Department of Health who helmed the state’s response to Covid-19. Ryan’s move away from the race now sets up a likely face-off in 2026 between Acton and Republican and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, endorsed by President Donald Trump. Both candidates have drawn handfuls of endorsements: Acton has received strong support from local officials and state lawmakers, and Ramaswamy has backing from a line-up of major labor unions as well as the Ohio Republican Party and the president. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine cannot run for a third term due to term limits. Ryan — who has drawn Democrats’ ire for his cryptocurrency ties — represented a portion of the Akron area for 20 years in Congress before launching a 2021 Senate bid, which he lost to JD Vance by 6 points.
