I turned 40 today. Spent the day with fam including seeing ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER with mum and dad as the last film of my 30s in the hometown cinema of my youth. It remains a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ film and happily the parents both enjoyed it a lot. They thought it was really well done, funny and smartly written.

Too many people focusing on the budget of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER and desperate to label it a “flop”. Firstly, they’re not film lovers—they’re capitalist losers. Secondly, nobody will care in 5 years. It’ll be an Oscar-winning classic in WB’s catalogue that will remain forever culturally relevant.

I like *several* of Ellis’ books, but this is yet again another dumb opinion from him. Like, yeah, movies are political and can be left or right in those politics and yeah lefties will probably be more attracted to movies like OBAA. What’s the point there, exactly? It’s the text of the movie!

‘Future’ is about how people’s antiquated ideas are keeping them from moving forward in the world. ‘God Control’ is very literally about gun control. “The nation lied, we lost respect / When they talk reforms, it makes me laugh.” The whole album isn’t like it and there are very naff lyrics, but 🤷🏻‍♂️

Went to Bava’s BLOOD AND BLACK LACE this evening with @stephenarussell.bsky.social and another friend. A man sat down directly next to us and PULLED OUT A PUPPET. He proceeded to have conversations with it with his hand up the puppet’s bum. Life is packing in some last min memories before I turn 40.

Big yikes to discover George Miller is on the judging panel for something called the OMNI AI Film Festival. "AI cinema is no longer a niche experiment; it’s becoming a global movement, and Australia is at the centre of it", according to the press email I received. 1000 works already entered. Yikes.

TRON: ARES rides a similar sort of dorky spectacle vibe to the AVATAR movies but without the heart or Cameron's panache. Not as intentionally obtuse as its predecessor, which can be good and bad. The visuals and music are, typically, fantastic—I do love a sound mix that you can feel in my bowels.
