Hi there! 👋😃
h/t to @hkperkinson.bsky.social -- great find!
"[S]chools have gotten so caught up in the points-grades-GPA game that students have lost sight of the real goal: learning. I can’t use AI to skip all the work if learning is my goal, but it’s really easy to do so if my goal is getting the highest number of points I can get on an assignment."

🤨The trouble AI is making for traditional school systems should be a wake up call.

With each undergrad class I teach (# < 30 per class) I write a personal note on a nice card & place it in envelope & pass out on last day of class. I tell them what they are great at. The students love it & keep the cards. I urge you to try it.

there is a very good book about transatlantic exchange of fascist, eugenicist and racist ideas in the early 20th century and how those ideas shaped the nazi government in its early years. this has been transformed in popular understanding to "the nazis copied jim crow"
If you’ve heard the “the Nazis got their ideas from the US segregationists” I beg you to please stop. This is both false and it minimizes historical European antisemitism in a misguided attempt to emphasize the nature of US anti-Black racism.

It’s horrific without comparison to Nazism.
May I politely encourage you to reconsider this framing. It is inaccurately stated and suggests consistent and strong linkages that do not exist.

The Nazis did not “get their ideas” from confederate laws. Antisemitism and anti-Jewish laws existed in Europe long before the Confederacy…

You know your child has truly become a lover of reading when books join the other must-haves they'll refuse to leave home without (water bottle, fidget spinner, etc).

"Watch us." Two simple words with incredible power. 💥

The next generation isn't waiting for permission to lead. They are stepping up, speaking out, and demanding better. It’s not just about the future; it’s about creating change right now.

Education isn't merely the transmission of facts; it’s the ignition of a spark. 🕯️

At Global Village School, we share Robert Frost's (attributed) vision: guiding students to find their own path and awakening them to the joy of a lifetime of learning and growth.

Refining the art of personalized education since 1999.

Over the last quarter-century, families from all over the world have come to us certain of two things: they want what's best for their kids' education, and they're utterly terrified of making the wrong choice.

Still thinking about this post...
Every rich person is going to tell *you* how great AI teaching is while sending *their* kids to the kind of schooling the Ancient Greeks would recognize. I just wish everyone would think about why that is.
I think we’re on the cusp of mass attempts to automate teaching, and I also think it is going to be a massive wasteful failure in ways that will make the “learning loss” of the pandemic look like a speed bump next to a mountain.

🥹There are few joys in life like watching your kids level up. Little people are making discoveries on the regular, and one of the true gifts of non-traditional schooling is that you actually get to be there when they happen!

I think children and young people need to feel a sense of discovery even while adults are guiding the content and the environment. Being curious is a skill we can learn how to use! It gives us a sense of agency. If we only ever memorise what people have already found out, learning becomes static. 🤷‍♀️
