I'm making pumpkin cinnamon buns for a friends dinner this weekend and to get rid of stone of the extra pumpkin I decided to also contribute a 1.5x recipe of pumpkin cream cheese dip, but even with that and making myself some pumpkin spice syrup, I'm gonna have way more than I know what to do with 🫠
godfrey.bsky.social
every recipe I use with pumpkin calls for at most 80ml of pumpkin and every can of pumpkin is at least 800ml

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Look, I'm sympathetic to interviewers but man, you've got to have never watched The Wire or read any David Simon interaction to imagine a more AI-positive response than this.

shelters have violence, lice
public housing has bedbugs

telling ppl to live in indignity is not 'helping' them

it's offering a shit option so you can say you did something and forget about them

it is shameful and beneath us as Canadians

people complained a lot when i was in community news about us posting wire stories about BC/nat'l/int'l news, and i get that complaint, but we didn't fill the local news page with it. it's just bizarre to go to the BC news page and see less than a quarter of the top stories directly impact BC
godfrey.bsky.social
go to Global's BC news page, and you will find among its top stories:

- 5 international stories
- 4 news stories from other provinces
- the same Blue Jays story twice
- 1 national story with relevance to BC
- 2 BC stories

like, they have world/national pages for a reason?

As others, including Ireland, rush to help their citizens involved with the flotilla, here’s what Canada’s government told me of the six Canadians on board:

“The Government of Canada is not able to guarantee the safety of Canadian travelers, or to provide them with security and protection abroad.”

media@international.gc.ca writes:

Hi Rachel, We will get back to you asap. Thanks,

In a follow up:

Please see our response:
The Government of Canada is not able to guarantee the safety of Canadian travelers, or to provide them with security and protection abroad. The decision to travel is personal, and individuals are responsible for their own safety abroad. Global Affairs Canada (GAC) advises Canadians avoid all travel to Palestine due to the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip and the unpredictable security situation in the West Bank. More information is available on our travel advice webpage.
While the Goverment of Canada has no plans to accompany the flotilla, this does not in any way detract from Canada's position that humanitarian assistance into Gaza must be immediately scaled-up to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation. We continue to urge Israel to allow the immediate entry of UN-coordinated humanitarian assistance, via land crossings, into and throughout Gaza.
Since October 2023, Canada has committed more than $400 million in international assistance in response to the current crises in Palestine.
The immediate priority must be a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a sustained influx in UN-led humanitarian aid. Canada is committed to continue

"This Court has listened carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk’s captors for masking-up and has heard the same reasons advanced by ... ICE. It rejects this testimony as disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a single reason—to terrorize Americans into quiescence."

Young’s opinion, which rules that the Trump admin illegally targeted pro-Palestinian students for deportation, is absolutely scathing.

“In all our history we have never tolerated an armed masked secret police…ICE brings indelible obloquy to this administration and everyone who works in it.”
And there's the issue of masks. This Court has listened
carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk's captors for masking-
up and has heard the same reasons advanced by the defendant Todd
Lyons, Acting Director of ICE. It rejects this testimony as
disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a
single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence. Small
wonder ICE often seems to need our respected military to guard
them
as they go about implementing our immigration laws. It
should be noted that our troops do not ordinarily wear masks.
Can you imagine a masked marine? It is a matter of honor -- and
honor still matters.
To us, masks are associated with cowardly
desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan. In all our history we
have never tolerated an armed masked secret police.
Carrying on
in this fashion, ICE brings indelible obloquy to this
administration and everyone who works in it
"We can not escape
history," Lincoln righty said. "[It] will light us down in
honor or dishonor, to the latest generation." Abraham Lincoln,
Second Annual Message to Congress (Dec. 1, 1862) .
Perhaps we're now afraid to stick our necks out. If the
distinguished Homeland Security intelligence agency can be
weaponized to squelch the free speech rights of a small, hapless
group of non-citizens in our midst, so too can the Federal Home
Loan Mortgage Corporation, and the audit divisions of the I.R.s.
and the Social Security Administration be unconstitutionally

In an email to CHEK News today Island Health said:

Island Health is committed to investing in a full continuum of mental health and addictions care from prevention to recovery, because recovery is not a straight-line journey, and people need to be met and supported where they are. Overdose prevention services are just one part of the work to build a seamless system of mental health and addictions care, which spans prevention, early intervention, harm reduction, and treatment and recovery.
Ensuring all people are treated with respect and dignity, and patients who use substances receive equitable and accessible care that is free from stigma and judgement is a priority for Island Health. We are focused on enhancing care and connecting people to health services wherever they are at in their journey, particularly in the face of the enduring toxic drug crisis.
Our major hospital sites, including Royal Jubilee and Nanaimo Regional General hospitals, have Addictions Medicine Consult Service (AMCS) teams embedded within them. These expert teams, including specialized physicians, work closely with patients who use substances to develop unique and tailored care plans that meet the needs of patients, protect the safety of staff and other patients, and align with provincial policies and regulations. AMCS clinicians are focused on care planning that manages withdrawal symptoms related to substance use, with the goal of supporting patient comfort and reducing the need to use substances while admitted to hospital.
Currently, there is no new or standalone funding available to health authorities for this type of service expansion. We are continuing to support patients during their hospital stay with our existing AMCS services, while also working with our partners and clinicians to explore additional ways to support patients who are unable to abstain from substance use during inpatient admission.

We have some ideas on how Canada can stop being complicit in Israel's massacre.

idk, maybe it's fine to subsidize essential services? why does an essential service need to be profitable?
