Farewell to Tom Stoppard, who as a playwright made words dance, explode, soar to the heavens and acknowledge their own limitations as they did so. And always glowing within the cerebral fireworks was a questing, rueful, empathic wonder. He took us to Arcadia and Utopia and back.

Both Nunn's and Nichols's productions of The Real Thing were so good. Very moving, as they must be. Good work from the bounced Czech.
A professor spent an entire lecture on the Dadaist French limerick in Travesties. It was thrilling.

I drove to and from college with the original cast recording of The Real Thing on the stereo.

All of this in a second language. Amazing. Rest in peace.

#Stoppard was asked an interview when R&G was premiering in NYC, "What's your play about?" He said, "It's about to make me very rich."

I asked #Stoppard if it was true he wrote a certain scene in Schindler's List. He said, "Sort of. I said to take out her lines." Which of course made the scene terrifying. (He really liked Zaillian's script.)

The summer after my freshman year I bought a $3.25 ticket in the mezz for R&G Are Dead, and when it was over I thought, yeah, this theater thing can be cool, and I should maybe try it. RIP Tom #Stoppard.

One of whom presented a Russian capitulation document as a US peace plan. That’s the headline. We need headlines that are true and not news jargon that washes out the basic facts.
President Donald Trump’s demand that Ukraine sign a deal by Thanksgiving appears to have softened as he leaves some of the most important details of the peace plan in the hands of his envoys, one of whom was just embroiled in a high-profile phone leak. https://wapo.st/481ZdYG
Trump steps back from Ukraine peace process, sends out envoys
Envoy Steve Witkoff, who in new phone leaks appears to have advised Russia on negotiations, heads to Moscow next week to discuss the peace plan.

I can’t believe people in the room don’t push back. It doesn’t matter if he’s the president, part of holding him accountable is standing up to his bullying— especially if he’s doing it right in front of your face

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

I know 1000 times as many controllers as he's ever met. OK, maybe only 100 times as many.

This is offensive beyond belief.

8 Democratic-caucus senators sold us out by voting with the Republicans.

None of this could’ve happened without Chuck Schumer agreeing to it.

Schumer is also letting this little measure in the CR slide through. 👇👇
🧵Did you hear?

Tucked into the CR is a measure that would allow 8 Republican senators to sue the US govt for $500k each over Jack Smith investigating them for Jan 6 & searching their phone records.

A measure that would pay them half a million dollars each for breaking the law.
