I think the bigger issue here is that when people review papers, they won't check references, unless it's a paper they're already familiar with. It's easy to say "prior literature says <blah>" and cite real papers that don't actually say <blah>.

this is a big reason why studies like this essentially function as ads for AI. Invoking sci-fi tropes lets AI companies allow our own preconceptions about AI in sci-fi to take over, making it easy to imagine that Anthropic's product is ready to go forth and act on the world as a person would.
i'm fascinated when it says things like this bc i don't think "hacking into anthropic's servers" is something it's even remotely capable of doing, and i am half-convinced that what it's doing here is playing the role of an evil computer based on sci-fi stories that went into its training set
