omg, it turns out the "symbols" they were talking about were actually a reference to helldivers 2. insane.
Two law enforcement sources told CNN that agents quickly ran an initial search on one of the markings, including a series of arrows, which analysts initially interpreted to be a connection to the transgender community. That information remains unverified and is still being investigated. One read, "hey fascist! catch!" with an up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols. screenshot from helldivers 2: "EAGLE 500KG BOMB", then an up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols

That's so weird, you forgot to include "immigration lawyer" in your bio! You should probably correct that before somebody assumes you're talking out of your ass.

Thanks for being the exact type of person this thread is complaining about.

Another vote for The Social Network. Steve Jobs (2015) is also amazing.

i think the real, good faith criticism of FIRE is specifically that its college free speech rankings (and deplatforming database) are a complete mess with no real grounding in objective metrics, and yet they reflect a massive percentage of FIRE's contribution to the public discourse. 🧵

"Fake moral panic"

FIRE pointed problems out where it saw them. Your problem is with the people in office. "You shouldn't say anything that someone with bad intent should misuse even if it's right" is stupid position worth Erp consideration.

Surely their repeated insistence that they value free speech should allow them to be ranked among the other schools? Ranking them at #252 seems like a better way to show that they're full of shit than a few blog posts.

Ari,

This article, written by Jerry Falwell Jr. himself, makes out Liberty University to be a bastion of free speech and expression.

So, can Liberty be ranked with the real schools yet? Or will it stay on the kid gloves "warning list"?

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell writes that Liberty bucks the trend of many college campuses, where freedom of speech is a “mute” point.

Hi Ari,

How are we meant to take FIRE seriously when its college "free speech" rankings put the actual worst offenders on their own, separate list in order to artificially keep Harvard at the bottom?

Follow-up: why is FSU ranked third best despite their compliance with the "STOP WOKE ACT"?
From FIRE's website:

"Warning Schools
The following schools have policies that clearly and consistently state that it prioritizes other values over a commitment to freedom of speech. These colleges were excluded from the rankings and were scored relative to one another.

Pepperdine University - 29.64
Saint Louis University - 17.49
Liberty University - 34.91
Baylor University - 24.96
Hillsdale College - 46.73
Brigham Young University - 26.27” From FSUNews.com:

Such censorship mirrors the attack on "indoctrinating" education already felt in Florida following the state-mandated removal of DEI programs and curriculums through the Stop WOKE Act and Senate Bill 266 signed in 2022 and 2023, respectively. On Feb. 12, all FSU students received an email informing them of changes made to the general education course inventory that removed 432 courses, including "Theories of African American Studies" and "LGBTQ History," from the list.
