This cartoon has four panels. Each is a different scene, but they all focus on the same character, an ordinary-looking white guy with glasses, wearing a polo shirt. I'll call him "Glasses."

PANEL 1

Glasses is walking in a city as he reads his phone. In the background, across the street, we see a group of protestors with signs saying "Stop It!" and "Enough Already!"

GLASSES (thought): Bills, bills... Oh, well, whatcha gonna do?

PANEL 2

Glasses is sitting on a bench at a bus stop, still reading his phone. There are a couple of sleeper tents on the sidewalk.

GLASSES (thought): Oh, wow, the news is awful... We really are descending into fascism.

PANEL 3

Glasses is stepping off a bus, while still staring at the phone in his hand. In the foreground, a couple of men wearing backwards baseball bats, their faces hidden by balaclavas, are wrestling a woman into submission.

GLASSES (thought): I should put my phone away... Can't lose another day to doomscrolling.

PANEL 4

Glasses, now in sweatpants, is on a sofa in his living room, still reading his phone. Through a window behind him, we can see masked soldiers marching by.

GLASSES (thought): Should I join a fruit subscription service?

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

Omg this is so apt

Another confirmation of the "everyone is twelve now" theory.
Patrick Cosmos @veryimportant.lawyer:
working on a new unified theory of american reality i'm calling "everyone is twelve now"

"I'm strong and want to have like fifty kids and a farm" of course you do. You're twelve. "I don't want to eat vegetables I think steak and French fries is the only meal" hell yeah homie you're twelve. "Maybe if there's crime we should just send the army" bless your heart my twelve year old buddy

Ok yes but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck compared to real translation
gynostar.bsky.social
So? It still sucks compared to real translation.

They use it for shit and giggles. They do not pay for it. Google traffic is crashing because Google has enshitified its product—including putting AI summaries at the top, masquerading as real answers to people's queries. Regardless, who cares how many people are using it? *They're not paying for it*
gynostar.bsky.social
Ok but if you use Google translate, it *will* contain errors and possible nonsense. It's simply not a substitute for human translation.
gynostar.bsky.social
Omg what a good point, nobody ever needs to use a human translator again
gynostar.bsky.social
Compared to learning the language or getting a human to translate.
gynostar.bsky.social
Not really. The few people who find it useful are already overpaying for it, but the vast majority of users are just curious or using it for fun. If/when they have to pay for it, they simply won't use it anymore, because it fills no particularly useful niche.

Google translate sucks though

Bari Weiss's first message to CBS staff as Editor-in-Chief, shared with me:

"…I stand for the same core journalistic values that have defined this profession since the beginning, and I will continue to champion them alongside you…"

(Staff tell me CBS would never publish stuff The Free Press has)

..
Dear Colleagues:
I am thrilled and humbled to be writing to you as the new editor-in-chief of CBS News.
Growing up, CBS was a deep family tradition. Whenever I hear that tick, tick, tick or that trumpet fanfare, it sends me right back to our den in Pittsburgh. The opportunity to build on that legacy with you-and to renew it in an era that so desperately needs it is an extraordinary
privileg Right now, I imagine you have some questions. I do, too.
My goal in the coming days and weeks is to get to know you. I want to hear from you about what's working, what isn't, and your thoughts on how we can make CBS News the most trusted news organization in America and the world. I'll approach it the way any reporter would-with an open mind, a fresh notebook, and an urgent deadline.
What I can tell you on day one is that I stand for the same core journalistic values that have defined this profession since the beginning, and I will continue to champion them alongside you: 1. Journalism that reports on the world as it actually is.
2. Journalism that is fair, fearless, and factual.
3. Journalism that respects our audience enough to tell the truth plainly-wherever it leads.
4. Journalism that makes sense of a noisy, confusing world.
5. Journalism that explains things clearly, without pretension or jargon.
6. Journalism that holds both American political parties to equal scrutiny.
7. Journalism that embraces a wide spectrum of views and voices so that the audience can contend with the best arguments on all sides of a debate.
8. Journalism that rushes toward 8. Journalism that rushes toward the most interesting and important stories, regardless of their unpopularity.
9. Journalism that uses all of the tools of the digital era.
10. Journalism that understands that the best way to serve America is to endeavor to present the public with the facts, first and foremost.
I look forward to meeting many of you in the days ahead and to listening and learning from you. I am profoundly honored to join you-and I can't wait to get started.
With gratitude and excitement,
Bari
