What better time for an intro post than #LGBTQSTEMDay!

Hey y'all! I'm queer, disabled🦻🏻, and often distracted by birds 😜.

I work in bird conservation in an academic-adjacent role - think population monitoring and reporting. Florida Scrub-Jays are my current professional (& personal) jam.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵
This past Sunday, #VacationSundays no. 19, I was hanging out with friends again. Highlights were watching Great British Bake Off in person with my cooking show friend (we've had to do virtual watch parties since I moved last year), and finding a barred owl out in the early afternoon while on a walk!
For #VacationSundays no. 18 (Oct. 26) I made a dutch baby for breakfast, went birding in hopes of some later migrants, and went for an evening run!
#VacationSundays no. 17 (Oct. 19) was spend relaxing and recovering from lots of driving on Friday (down to Miami and back for a really popular orchid festival). I enjoy romance novels from time to time as lighter reading and couldn't resist one about birding (mixed feelings overall tho).
On #VacationSundays no. 16 (Oct. 12), I ran into a birding acquaintance and we ended up spending the better part of the morning together at 2 different natural areas in search of migrants. Overall we were pretty successful, though we missed a Nashville Warbler he had been seeing earlier in the week.
Accidentally got over a month behind! 😬

Picking up where I left off, #VacationSundays no. 15 was the first weekend of October which I spent surrounded by friends celebrating my birthday (earlier in the week). It was a wonderful start to 32!

NOOOO!!!! Teen Vogue’s political reporting was one of the last holdouts of actual political journalism left as mainstream outlets caved to fascism… this does not bode well.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.
Happy birthday, Jer! Hope your next year is full of excellent birds and people!

19 hours left, please share ❤️‍🔥 Maybe you’re fatiguing of these hourly posts, but what are a few posts, a clicked share, in contrast with being able to help six families & a camp survive death every day?

Fight against this slow genocide. Food & shelter. Last check, we’re at 39/1000

Please share, only 4 hours left: the giving circle has a special dose of hope: one of the families is expecting a baby very soon (🧿) !!!

With lack of food, shelter, medicine, we MUST step up for this malnourished mom. Anything helps.

I'm 100% with Ryan on this (and not just because I was on the same trip)!! Anthropomorphizing can of course go too far, but I've seen over and over again in my outreach work that a little bit can really help people connect to nature more!
I have a lot of complicated feelings about the Catholic Church after growing up in it, but they do get some things right.
Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”
Ha! Then I'll continue with my plan to study and absorb bird info on the couch instead of watching tv, and then bring the knowledge in the field but not the book!

For friendsofabracadaver on tumblr, a Least Bittern! Big thanks once again for the #Waymakers donation. The challenge is over for this year but I'll be wrapping up bird art for donors over the next couple weeks. Much appreciation to all of you who joined in!

aww they're so tiny and cute!
haha yes that sounds perfect for it! if I wasn't in an apartment and had a yard that could support it I would totally get some!
Well uhh that's something I guess 😬

(Depending on how far you're willing to travel, check out Sweet Bay Nursery. They're in Parrish, which is def worth the trip from Highlands Co but maybe not if you're further east and/or north. Lovely staff and good selection of natives.)
it's time I finally step up my shorebird ID skills (I live by the beach afterall!) so I was looking at guides but oof I didn't realize the weight of shorebird knowledge 😅
schmear on poppyseed or egg and cheese on everything
Thank you! And thanks for your always interesting curation of 'on this day' history nuggets!
So weird! It *is* my birthday and I keep getting confetti over my profile pic but thankfully it hasn't asked if I want to tell any collaborators yet.
1993: I was born and while I wouldn't say I'm following in Darwin's footsteps (which is for the best, they're a bit 😬 at times) I also enjoy staring at nature and making observations.

Happy birthday, birthday buddy!
