There are many reasons to hate on generative AI and large language models but my personal #1 reason is gen AI marketing appropriating the sparkle emoji.

It's blatant erasure of sarcastic bitch culture and I won't stand for it.

Occasionally I google something on my phone and I don't open it with Firefox where my adblocker lives and I get ads like this and I think, if forcing me to look at this is the only way that websites can continue to exist honestly I kind of don't really want websites to continue to exist.

It's SUCH an irresistible urge, right? Just something primal and lizard-brain level. I wonder what evolutionary psychologists would make of it. Maybe obnoxious moustaches are reminiscent of some kind of deadly caterpillars our ancestors eradicated or something.

"I don't think AI can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level" is such a powerful statement. Just nailing the fact that AI is neither exciting nor terrifying. It's not even in the same league.

Though like I say, I'm sure it does happen sometimes, but given my recent reading experience, which tracks with yours in the "hmm, this could really use an editor" way, I get the vibe that it's a lot rarer than MSS being underedited.

(This is distinct from "editor makes the book adhere to a specific commercial publisher's requirements", because I mean, if a writer doesn't want their work to follow those rules, why did they pick what particular publisher?)

To be honest I am deeply wary of the narrative of the Editor Crassly Commercialising The Poor Writer's Book. I'm not convinced it's a real thing. It feels like one of those things that happen all the time in films but almost never in reality.

I've just realised the connection to your own post isn't apparent, hah — if people wanted to use this thing Microsoft wouldn't need to put ANY ENTIRE NEW KEY on the standard keyboard ffs

I've disabled it and every time I press it by accident it opens the text input setting at the "customise Copilot key" section.

I don't have the option to just map it to Ctrl so I can restore the original purpose of the key.
