A lot of teachers use AI to help manage email workflow. There's a lot of opportunity to be gained from this, but also some warnings to keep in mind. Can you think of anything else?

This is a good point. I think we're already seeing a change in what is valued in education and in the broader workforce.
I do wonder if AI will lead to a further bifurcation of education, where people who intrinsically desire deep engagement will be studying in a different way from others.

As creators maximize for engagement, we must cultivate mindfulness in our children and a love of learning. Yes, the tendency toward sinking into addictive media is there, but also, there is the DIY learning revolution. It's our choice, and we can give our kids the tools to choose wisely.
#AI has the power to make content *much* more addictive. If we don’t get a handle on it now, Gen Alpha and Gen Beta are going to be completely lost in the most entertaining content ever created.

Many corporate workers have access to apps like Copilot, specifically designed with guardrails to protect data privacy. It's difficult to use AI for some teacher tasks due to the sensitivity of student data if you're DIYing it with ChatGPT yourself. A systemic solution in education makes sense.

Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" - I love this story, especially around Halloween season. But it can be tough for ESL learners in the classroom. I wonder how a teacher could use AI to help make it more accessible?

This really illustrates the public sector vs corporate sector mindset split. The corporate sector can't stop throwing money at AI, desperate to maintain and grow their market share as other companies do the same. Without competition, the public sector does not face the same urgency.

Morning desert jog ... woops! adventure
My first time going for a jog in the desert! Found a trail on Google Maps and followed it until I got lost - loved learning about the desert plants and animals I found out here. Made it back thirsty but happy.

Wrote a short piece arguing that higher ed must help steer AI. TLDR: If we outsource this to tech, we outsource our whole business. But rejectionism is basically stalling. If we want to survive, schools themselves must proactively shape AI for education & research. [1/6, unpaywalled at 5/6] +

Teachers + AI: How Do We Make the Promise Real?
Back in early 2023, the education community was full of excitement for AI in education. Sal Khan's TED talk promised "an AI tutor for every student, and an AI assistant for every teacher". Has that vision been realized? Let's do it!

Chris, I've lived that lifestyle too! Your Europe map is inspiring. My journeys took me mostly to East and Southeast Asia, but I'm working on building a home in the Houston, TX area now. But when I read that - "my backpack has been my office" - I'm feeling that wanderlust again!
My backpack has been my office for over a decade.

I’ve taught English across 5 different countries while exploring 60 more.

That journey completely transformed how I create video content today.

Let me tell you the story.

Clever hook from Khan's 2023 TED Talk — a bit of gloom to contrast with his message of AI sparking a learning renaissance. Yet I can’t help wondering: where are the stories of harmony between humans and these new tools? Who’s seen victories in their learning spaces lately?
