Clearly this isn't an easy time to have a proudly queer children's series, but at the same time that makes it more necessary than ever.

Finished @wiswell.bsky.social's book 'Someone you can Build a Nest in'. Really enjoyed it, would recommend! It seems to have achieved everything it set out to do, which must not have been easy considering the main character. 🖤

Now on to read The Murderbot Diaries by @marthawells.com !
The cover of the book. Two creatures stand on a road limned by trees, shrubs and funghi. They are approaching a town, seen off in the distance. The feeling is late medieval.

Got my first rejection, or rather: the absence of a message after the judging date went by and finalists were selected.

Rather than a defeat it feels as if it opens up possibilities. To quote that one Magic the Gathering card: "When nothing remains, everything is equally possible."

On to the next!
A Magic the Gathering card. Black borders with shimmering black and silver foundation. Fields in white (bone, eggshell and other off-white colors) with text on top of it.

The card name is One with Nothing. It's an Instant.

The design of the card is by Jim Nelson, I believe.

The illustration is bright pinks on top of blacks and dark blues. A man, bearded, East Asian, old, bald, stares ahead of him while three glowing pink orbs, each as big as his head, float around him like ball lightnings, connected by visual energy to his head.

Nearly finished a 6000 word story but the deadline is still a ways away... So now we're working on a completely different story that feels like it needs some love. 😊

Semiotic Standard icons designed by Ron Cobb for the USCSS Nostromo in Alien (1979).

They're everywhere in the USCSS Maginot from Alien Earth (2025).
A chart titled "Semiotic Standard" showing a collection of futuristic safety and system symbols designed for spacecraft. Each symbol is inside a square with red, black, white, gray, yellow, blue, or green coloring, and labeled with meanings such as “Pressurized Area,” “Cryogenic Vault,” “Airlock,” “Hazard/Warning,” “Exhaust,” “Radiation Hazard,” “High Radioactivity,” “Refrigeration,” “Direction,” and “Life Support System.” A legend at the bottom explains the color codes: red for visible/solid/alive/abnormal, white and grey for life-supporting conditions, black for vacuum and danger, yellow for harmful atomic/chemical processes, blue for lowered thermal condition, and green for biological substances. The chart is signed “R. Cobb.”

Writers should write what they want to write. (Or whatever they are compelled by their inner or exterior circumstances to write)
arula-ratnakar.bsky.social
There’s been some discussion about “authors should try to write solution stories,” and ”people want to read hope and optimism right now” and I get it, I want to *read* happy things too right now myself! but its just not in me right now to write that. (1/)
