If people don't go to prison when the AI bubble pops it'll be a generational mistake
Before Obama took office, a lot of Dems in office condemned all manner of things the Bush Admin did. When he took office they dropped it all.

Attacking trans children is about attacking all children in the same way attacking trans autonomy is about attacking all bodily autonomy. Our actions are particularly powerful, autonomous and brave, and that means even well meaning ppl find us ideologically disturbing

Feels like people are missing the forest for the trees with the rise of "nihilistic extremism". Being a nihilist in this world is not an illogical position, in fact you need some healthy nihilism as part of philosophical development. The problem is that we do not have the tools to build meaning.

Meaning is not inherent. It's an exercise in communication between subject and object. We used to have systems of meaning that defined themselves objectively, but we now see that objectivity is an illusion. We should be able to build a new world from that, but the old world holds us back.

Faced with only the old world's inherited meaning without being able to define the world we hold a place in, we are forced to adopt that meaning rather than define our own. So we play about with reactionary concepts like toys, no ideology, no motivation beyond reckless play with semiotics.

If you want to solve the problem with widespread nihilism, you need a new narrative that reflects the conditions of today and speaks to people where they are. That's why Mamdani won, he didn't just have good policies, he built a narrative that clicked and offered a part in it.

That's also how Trump won. He offered a narrative instead of drudging out the same old tired story. He gave his followers meaning and a place even when they disagreed with him entirely. People want to feel meaningful in their lives and it feels very very hard to do that nowadays.

Know this, people will always look for meaning. If they cannot create it, they will derive it. If they cannot derive it, they will try to phantasmically force whatever small meaning they can find onto the world around them. So you must create your own meaning however you can. There's no other way.

I will never understand this obsession with mandatory in-person work. people are happier when they have some flexibility and aren't chained to a commute!

anyway we should be a lot louder about desegregating sports along gender lines and it's really disappointing how many people are terrified of pushing back on the deeply eugenic logic behind banning trans women from sports beyond saying "they should be allowed to play."

It’s almost impossible to measure what people prefer in an environment where all kinds of factors influence where and how people live. There’s also an obvious absence of choice in most of the country. I’d warn against saying any evidence is all-caps overwhelming one way or the other.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

Imagine a town with only burger joints and one or two salad places 20 miles away. It would be hard to say the evidence is overwhelming that the majority of the town’s residents prefer burgers to salads. To me, that’s the suburban/urban housing preference debated distilled to its essence.

The overwhelming evidence of the past 100 years also includes redlining, white flight, government subsidies that enabled the growth of the suburbs, the construction of the interstate highways system… that most people now live in suburbs is not a factor of preference alone.
