I would struggle without a keyboard because I can't handwrite as fast as I type; last time I tried to handwrite anything longer than a grocery list, I got super-frustrated after about 30 minutes and gave up. Otherwise, I could do fine without most current writing technology, even stuff I use.

Yes, I use calculators, computer algebra, etc. If those vanished tomorrow, I would still be able to do physics, because I learned how to do the integrals myself

I realize many people don’t quite get that not every single professor in every single university teaches computer science and might actually be trained in and invested in teaching other things, like let’s say, history? Or poetry.
Or sociology.
It is not our job to teach students how to use AI.

“AI” isn’t a tool or technology or even a cluster of technologies with a misleading name. It’s the infrastructure at the foundation of a form of capitalism dependent on data brokering. We should be teaching our students about this and not teaching them about “responsible” use.

We have allowed the lazy, grifting Silicon Valley charlatans into the front door, & in doing so, we have learned just how many of our own colleagues & administrators simply are not interested in the actual business of education. It's incredibly demoralizing.

Thanks so much for your reporting on this, Ben. I just got an email from my campus's IT office triumphantly advertising free student access to four different AI models -- at the same time as we have a hiring freeze, caps on grad enrollment, and a 7% budget cut -- and wanted to scream.

Through JLI, I've taken students on a service trip to Midwest Books for Prisons, participated in a re-entry simulation to build awareness of the obstacles incarcerated folks face upon their release, and have been part of a team offering the first ever college courses @ a nearby state penitentiary.
