~ 7% global forests is plantation (young)

Young (Y) vs Old forests (O):
How do water + carbon (C) processes belowground differ?

Y: less streamflow & deep gw %
O: higher DOC + DIC; deep roots
Y&O: can have contrasting DOC CQ; consistent DIC dilution

“Are you afraid now?”

This pastor likely knows well that in the Gospels, Jesus’ most intense fear in the Garden of Gethsamane is *not* what he would endure, but rather that he would run from it
A Minneapolis pastor of an MCC church — a denomination rooted in LGBTQ equality — recounts being detained by ICE.

Says an ICE officer walked up to him as he was chanting “we are not afraid.”

The agent, he says, raised his gun and said “are you afraid now?”

A large December storm hit the mountains of the Pacific Northwest – and left snow conditions in the Yakima Basin worse off in its wake. How might this event be a harbinger of winters to come? I offer this perspective piece, published today in @theconversation.com #snow #drought #climatechange
The western US is in a snow drought, and storms have been making it worse
A major atmospheric river brought record precipitation to the Pacific Northwest, yet the snow and water supply still suffered. It’s a growing problem.

😳
The Broncos had a kickoff temperature of 60° or above for every home game this regular season.

First time that’s ever happened in team history.

Here's my deep dive on the serious homeowners insurance situation that Idaho is facing and some possible ways forward. The reporting forced me to rethink some of my assumptions, and I hope it helps folks better understand this serious problem. www.boisestatepublicradio.org/politics-gov...
As evidence of Idaho homeowners insurance crisis mounts, so does bipartisan concern
New data also points to major insurance impacts in places surprising to many, including the Snake River Plain.

This is a really important paper and such a privilege to be involved moving it forward. Sharon did a masterful job of synthesizing data from a diverse array of sites and drawing some super important conclusions for Critical Zone science. I’m confident the community will be interested in this paper

As this article alludes to, while Vought has likely coveted theatrical chance to do this, the timing of this is not at all happenstance. It is inextricably linked to Trump’s ham handed attempt to get Polis to release his state-convicted, election-denying lackey Tina Peters from jail
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

I first learned the term "snow drought" in 2015, when we received normal amounts of winter precipitation in the Northwest but record winter warmth left us with very little snowpack. That summer saw dire outcomes for fish and agriculture due to record low stream flows.
