Trump’s authoritarian threat to Europe and the UK
No room for complacency: the signs are that US authoritarianism will spread here – and we must be prepared

Worth reading every word of this - give the Electric Monk the afternoon off!
There has been outrage as the @acm.org rolls out AI generated summaries of papers. This is doing AI exactly wrong by replacing valuable, peer-reviewed content with a possibly inaccurate summary. It's still not too late to correct it though and use AI responsibly... anil.recoil.org/notes/acm-ai...
Dear ACM, you're doing AI wrong but you can still get it right

I remember Rob Reiner as the long-suffering Meathead on All In The Family. A regular in my childhood living room. This is too sad to think about.

I have learned something tonight!
As you may know, I have stopped using Twitter, and have decided to reproduce some of my more memorable threads here for posterity. Here’s one I hold wrote after a particularly engaging swordfighting lesson.

Buckle up, swordfighting fans, because I *have* studied my Agrippa!

Watching Star Wars with the Hyperfashionmum in Winnipeg when it first came out, and we were late for the first few minutes. Then watching The Force Awakens with her in Milton Keynes decades later, and seeing her get obliterated by the Starkiller. I still have the Chewbacca souvenir cup
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

A former UK prime minister held responsible for tens of thousands of deaths while the US president calls for elected politicians to be hanged.

A jolt of a reminder that law and policy are ultimately about life and death.

And politicians are often not up to dealing with such things.

Governments and voters are both reacting to algorithm-shaped “public opinion,” not grounded priorities. Immigration feels urgent because platforms amplify fear, pulling parties into hollow performances of toughness. The far right reads that drift as confirmation it’s winning.
Not everyone is unhappy about the Government's descent into anti-refugee politics
