🚨ICE has spent millions trying to recruit local police and sheriffs.

And right now, nothing in state law prevents local officers from taking “side jobs” as deportation agents.

AB 1537 by @isaacgbryan.bsky.social will CLOSE this loophole.

We’re proud to sponsor this important bill. 🧵

From widespread reports of ICE kidnappings to the killing of Renée Good, we’ve seen the devastating harm this rogue agency inflicts. We’re standing w/SF Supe Mahmood to support AB 1537, a critical state bill to protect Californians by preventing local & state law enforcement from
working for ICE.

The callousness on display in Minneapolis is not an isolated incident nor a symptom of dysfunction at DHS - it is the very nature of American immigration enforcement operating as designed.

"This ruling is a huge setback for all Americans. The Supreme Court's order means that ordinary aspects of our daily lives, where we work, the language we speak, or the communities we live in can be a basis for detention and questioning."
Today’s Supreme Court order is not the end of the case. The case is still pending at the Ninth Circuit and will still hear the full appeal. The Supreme Court could later review the case on the merits.

“When federal agencies are allowed to operate like a secret police force—stopping, arresting, and detaining people based on race, language, or occupation—the constitutional rights of all people are at risk.”
Today, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration’s horrific sweeping raids in Los Angeles can continue. We are outraged by this decision. There is nothing just about it.
