“Without trying to actually benefit student journalism, the IU Media School is offering up some key lessons for college reporters,” writes Annie Aguiar, former editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student.

This week, Indiana University fired Indiana Daily Student adviser Jim Rodenbush in what appears to be a grapple for control over the pages of an upcoming print issue. The firing comes after years of tension between the university and its flagship student publication.

I went through something like this during my two years as the editor of my small private college student newspaper. Not quite as grave, though heading in this direction. Feathers were beyond ruffled.

It didn't end well for the school.

@splc.org got involved and the school backed down.
UPDATE: More at Indiana University, with all IDS print being cut.

IU is getting very public criticism from one of its most famous (and wealthy) alums, Mark Cuban, over the fracture between the school and its student-run newspaper.

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

The point of a student newspaper is not to inform the students about stuff. The point is to teach the journalism students how to be journalists.

If the student journalists are only allowed to write about homecoming, they'll become journalists who write fluff pieces to keep the population docile.
They're trying to prevent the student newspaper from printing news, period. Not just a particular story.

"The Media School directed us to print no news in the paper... nothing but information about homecoming — no other news at all, and particularly no traditional front page news coverage."

• It was told to print no news in its homecoming edition, set to come out Thursday.
• It refused.
• The director of student media was fired.
• Hours later, IU cut all print editions of the paper, including Thursday’s issue.

Media Director pushed back. They sacked him, then hours later cut print entirely.

I wrote for the IDS back in the day. It was considered one of the top-tier college newspapers.
