Hey Blue-sky! I'm working on Innkeep, a game about being a sneaky innkeeper! You get to:

- Serve ale and food. 🍲🍺
- Eavesdrop on guests to learn their secrets. 🤫
- Develop a silver tongue and turn on the charm. 😏
- Sneak into bedrooms and steal trinkets. 💰
- Summon demons?? 🕯️🔥👹

A demon standing in a glowing pentagram. The player stands nearby, shocked. A sorceress in a purple and dark blue robe is raising a heart to the air. It is in a pixel art style. Theft mini game screen. We see a sleeping guest in a bed, a backpack nearby, and a cursor hand holding a sword. The common room of the Weary Pilgrim inn at night. It is in a pixel art style. There are four tables, around which sit eight people in three groups. The player character is wearing an apron, and listening to a conversation at one table. An alpine vista is in the background. In the foreground the player character is walking along a muddy road, towards the Weary Pilgrim inn.

OK I'm finding a way to get to get to this.

Today, The Word for World: The Maps of Ursula K. Le Guin opens at AA Gallery in London! Curated by Sarah Shin and Harriet Jennings, the exhibition presents a selection of Ursula's maps, including some that have never been exhibited before.
A photo of the entrance to The Word for World exhibition, with two banners hanging vertically down outside the doorway to a brick building with white-paned windows. A row of bicycles are parked in front. The banners are purple and white and say the name of the exhibition and Ursula K. Le Guin's name. A cord-wrapped rock rests on a vivid blue background next to a map of and program for The Word for World exhibition. A stack of copies of The Word for World book, which shows the title in vivid blue against a black cloth cover.

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

Also, the sprite is 71 frames long, with duplicate sprites used to slow down the animation. It's really only 11 frames or so...? Oh well!

To make the little beer filling icon appear above the players head when you pour beer? Yeah that's triggered by a global variable. No, I don't know why. And the trigger is also the counter. We set it to 1, and from there this fires off the counter.

Touch as little as possible. Resist any urge to "refactor". I mean, it all technically works... It just does what it does in very very stupid and inconsistent ways.

Parts of the Innkeep codebase are really quite old, and created when I had no idea what I was doing. It doesn't really impact any key systems, but now and then I have reason to look at the code for a barrel or door that I wrote in 2016 or so, and it's just freaky man. I try to back away slowly.

Start from the experience. What is the fantasy you're fulfilling?

Great video on how most games don’t need a gameplay hook, they need to create an experience people want to play.

It’s like how lots of game trailers have title cards like: “harvest, prep, cook, plate, serve!” without ever stating a goal of say:

“Make your dream Taiwanese food restaurant!"

Nothing like being able to listen to awesome music produced for your own game to get you motivated! 🔥🎶

I remember trying the steam version (or was it the gog version?) and running into some issues. Do you use some patches or something?

Holy smokes that's some amazing work.

I'll be honest I never played #1 or #3 so I've nothing to compare it to. But it felt to me like a nice blend of light strategic fiddling and siege / battle mechanics.

Good luck! We just gotta keep at it.

Second time out the gate I'll be putting a lot of focus on proper prototyping and playtesting as early as possible.

During my walks recently I've been mulling over what game I'll be doing next once Innkeep is out. Basic requirements:

1. A game I could feasibly make.
2. A game I would -want- to make.
3. A game (enough) people would want to play.

I think I've got two strong candidates.
