but turning it into a national news story to force the teacher out of the classroom seems...not fine.

I mean, I think it would be reasonable for the student to complain, have some sort of arbitration process, and if a supervisor thinks the kid should have gotten 50 instead of zero and talk to the TA about grading going forward, that seems completely fine.

the way to protect free speech in this instance is to show solidarity with the trans person being silenced. it's pretty straightforward.

the student was trolling her instructor; her instructor tried to respond in good faith, the student enlisted the right wing hate machine and got the instructor put on leave *for being trans.*

like, even if you disagree with her call! it doesn't really matter if you agree with the grade or think the assignment was not ideal or whatever. it doesn't even matter if you think the paper was a masterpiece!

and again, this attack on trans identity has been withering, brutal, and extended. if you are concerned about free speech, you need to be very concerned about a university firing a trans grad student for trying to do her job!

marginalized people are targeted for censorship *regardless of their opinions* because the main thing people want to prevent them from saying is simply "I exist."

the idea that the real danger to free speech here is that a Christian wasn't allowed to spew hatred without evidence in a psych class seems like a fundamental confusion endemic to a lot of 1st amendment discussions.

one of the single most controversial and dangerous opinions you can have right now is "trans people exist and I am one of them."

there is a years long moral panic ongoing to force LGBT ppl, and esp trans ppl, out of public life. their books are banned; they are being targeted in secondary and higher ed; their healthcare is being slashed; their passports are being revoked.

the problem is that the TA appears to have been the target of a deliberate campaign to silence trans people and force them out of public life. so, it seems like that should be a factor when discussing the first amendment? 1
Always liked Parker, so this nastiness is rather disappointing.

I’ll always defend trans rights as I have all my career. But I also believe in the First Amendment’s protecting people being wrong.

And that’s where my engagement will respectfully end for the day.
Here's what this is actually about, dumbass

That's also consistent with my observation that universities often side against the less powerful and vulnerable party in situations of conflict.

This is so unnerving because the pretext was so thin (the "essay" is an atrocity, and the student must have known that) and the university *jumped* at the opportunity to put the instructor on leave (!?!), "pending review" (a review would take 5 mins!). The admin is either complicit or spineless.

It's almost a familiar storyline by now.
1. An "egregious" violation of a students' rights by a teacher.
2. It turns out to be run of the mill bad work by the student.
3. It turns out to have been provoked or amplified by a huge network of right wingers.
4. Targeting trans people

Missing anything?

i’m genuinely so convinced all of this has been a planned operation by the student and her mother (who is commenting on this publicly, and associated closely with the republican party), and big far right propaganda account going all in on it. this is designed to oust trans people from public life
