Intro post! I'm Jae (formerly Jacqueline) Koyanagi, author of the sci-fantasy novel Ascension, among other things: jaekoyanagi.com

Currently, I'm deep into writing the first book of a character-driven romantic fantasy trilogy set in a lush, unusual world where divine magic abounds.
The book cover for Ascension: A Tangled Axon Novel by Jae Koyanagi (credited as Jacqueline on the cover). The illustration features main character Alana Quick, a Black woman with her hand on her hip, looking at the viewer. Behind her is the interior of a spaceship painted in cool colors with a view of a nebula and stars beyond. The cover for the audio series Ninth Step Station from Realm, featuring a textured background in cool, dark colors. The text reads: In the future, two mismatched cops must work together to solve crimes in a divided Tokyo: Ninth Step Station by award-winning authors Malka Older, author of Infomocracy; Fran Wilde, author of Updraft; Jacqueline Koyanagi, author of Ascension; and Curtis C. Chen, author of Waypoint Kangaroo. The cover for the audio series Ctrl-Alt-Destroy from Realm. The image features the old title for the series, Alternis, and the former name of the publisher, which was Serial Box. The illustration features main character Tandy Kahananui slicing through a video game foe with a sword, scattering them into digital fragments. The cover for the anthology Phantasm Japan, from Haikasoru. The illustration features the head of a Japanese woman who is looking up toward the title. Behind her is the Tokyo skyline, while flames emerge from her right eye and winged insects flutter around her.

Lovely! Thank you for this feature! Do you think a light mode toggle may ever come to be? There are some eye conditions (I have one) that makes dark mode painful. A toggle would really help out some of your potential users. Either way, thanks so much for your hard work!

A new portrait of Monolophosaurus. The crest here is more voluminous than most reconstructions, exploring the idea that the underlying bone might have been anchoring a larger pneumatised casque.
#SciArt
A digital portrait of a large carnivorous dinosaur in a forest setting. The dinosaur has a large boney crest above its snout and eyes, and large folds of skin hanging around its neck and jaws. The dinosaur is mostly earthy brown, but with brighter blues and pinks around the eyes and throat.

sorry you do have to write to be a writer. if the noun is mostly a verb, you have to do the verb to be the noun

Diachea leucopodia, the White-footed slime mold, has an iridescent reflection that appears metallic during this stage of growth

Like little metal cylinders on short white stalks, a slime mold grows on a reddish-brown stick. They look like small towers with a bit of an alien-like shape. Hints of blue, green, and purple can be seen in the reflection of the cylindrical top.

Believability. I can and do love terrible fictional characters, but what they all have in common is that I believe they would behave the way they do, and that the people around them react in believable ways.

Terrible behavior should elicit believable reactions. (Too often, it doesn't.)

Charlie's latest prompt is so fun. It's also been interesting how many of us love our MCs for their bad traits.🤣

But there's some sort of nebulous limit, perhaps? I know I've disengaged from a lot of media because the MC was too unlikable.

What does a flawed character need to keep you?🤔

I will absolutely go out of my way to avoid AI generated slop of any variety. I don't care who you are, what types of books you produce, which movies your studio made that I loved in the past. If you start incorporating AI generated elements into your work, it's trash.

when people complain that a story has “too many digressions” I want to ask them whether perhaps the digressions ARE the story

Their journey and why they're right for each other is revealed in the story; I don't want to give all that away, but I'm having a blast writing it.

ASCENSION featured a sapphic polyamorous romance (a "V" rather than a triad) between two disaster lesbians and a bisexual doctor.

My current project's romance is monogamous, strangers to friends to lovers between a holy woman and a kind, dapper "monster" (Guillermo del Toro monster vibes).

Tell me about the Romance you’ve written! What is the pair/polycule like? What made them right for each other? How did they get there? #WritingPrompt

I love it, too. And I love books that take their time lingering on the worldbuilding, especially the intersection of worldbuilding and character. I hope working on your project is immensely fulfilling, marketable or not!

Curious to see how this takes off! I've signed up via Bluesky. I thought it might be worthwhile to point out that my profile on nooki is a 403 page. I'm not sure if that's because I'm using a custom handle? Not sure if any other users will have this issue as well. nooki.me/user/jaekoya...

The only correct take on a fundamentally anti-human technology.
Screenshot of David Simon interview
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Some of the things I find most appealing are the hardest to market. I love quiet stories exploring character.

Flamboyant cuttlefish (Ascarosepion pfefferi)

This one was a struggle... such a complicated little person, but great name!

Photo of hand holding a small 4"x4" original autumn landscape oil painting by Tisha Mark. The painting shows a body of water reflecting colors from a sunset sky surrounded by trees that are turning red, brown, and gold. A paint palette with puddles of oil paint and a paintbrush and palette knife are visible in the background.
