Intro post! I'm Jae (formerly Jacqueline) Koyanagi, author of the sci-fantasy novel Ascension, among other things: jaekoyanagi.com

Currently, I'm deep into writing the first book of a character-driven romantic fantasy trilogy set in a lush, unusual world where divine magic abounds.

I've lived here for a few years now, but I'm still not accustomed to going outside on a December morning in short sleeves.

Sahn, the wind goddess

She knows all your spoken secrets, and when on the wind her loose scales sound like wind chimes.

Minor spoilers:

Deleyora's people are known for their beauty; it's regarded a bit like a lure, something to mesmerize and distract. So Grisira and the rest of her loved ones are initially wary, viewing his alluring appearance as a tool of manipulation.🧵
To wrap our first week of #Smutcember, tell us:

What do your characters find *physically* attractive about each other? (We'll get into the more intangible traits later.)

What a satisfying day of writing. Not all of them are like this; most of this week was a struggle as I dealt with chronic pain and other ailments. But today, it was magic. Even if most of it was about my poor characters refusing to let themselves be happy.

Why is sex-as-punishment or sex-as-suffering elevated as art, but as soon as you see characters having sex for the pure pleasure of it, it's immediately dismissed? Why do we have so many graphic depictions of sexual assault and sexual trauma and so very few of sexual fulfillment? Rly makes u think

When we meet Grisira, she's 52—about a quarter of the way through her natural lifespan. However, she's afflicted by a malevolent eldritch force that she believes will kill her sooner than later, and is suffering from survivor's guilt. She doesn't see a future for herself. 🧵
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

How much does your character think about the future?

Do they have plans for retirement and a pension set up? A distant dream but no real plans? Do they live each day as it comes and never think about it?

Since I'm participating in that romance-oriented prompt game this month, I'll re-share the commissioned art of my non-human couple, Grisira and Deleyora. I can't wait to share more about their species in the future. Grisira art by @danilluzin.com, Deleyora art by @grendraws.bsky.social

For Grisira and Deleyora, there are important layers to their chemistry that I can't discuss due to spoilers, but otherwise: Shared compassion initiates their connection, as does artistic expression (she's an oil painter, he's a violinist). Art and music play a huge role in their story. (1/3)
#Smutcember, it's time to talk about our work! To start off:

How do you build chemistry between your characters? You can speak in general terms or give specific examples, whichever you prefer.

I don’t know how many times we’re gonna have to say this, but, “People with disabilities need AI to create!” is the dumbest, most ableist thing you can say and please fucking stop.

It ends up being all over the place because I choose books based on cover copy and sample pages, and whatever sex (or lack thereof) they might contain ends up being a surprise.

I'm writing monster romance these days, but most that I've read were DNFs for me due to prose or relationship dynamics. 🧵
Last establishing question, #Smutcember:

Do you read different kinds of smut than you write, or is that Venn diagram a circle?

My Tidal 2025 wrapped is, in actuality, just my November 2025 wrapped since I adopted the platform recently. But I learned that I'm apparently the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra's second biggest fan? I'll take it!

Sleep Token was only number 10 on my most listened artists list which is a travesty.

Yolo often stands with his little back toes crossed, which I find ridiculously cute!
You can see vultures don't have bulky feet and talons built for grasping/carrying like other raptors. Their more chicken-like feet are meant for bracing on food to pull at it with their powerful beaks, instead.

Probably writing, though I enjoy both. Like many others who have answered this prompt, reading sex scenes can be hit or miss depending on execution. I want to feel like physical intimacy is a natural outgrowth of character dynamics, both individually and together. That can mean a lot of things (1/2)
Continuing our #Smutcember setup:

Do you have a preference between reading smut or writing it, or perhaps engaging with it in a different form of media entirely? If so, what about that form of engagement appeals to you the most?

I’m constantly enamored with the artifice of baroque theatre sets; before I retire, I’d love to design a set all of drops and shaped flats like the Drottningholm Slottsteater or the Théâtre de la Reine at Versailles. I know high school theatre has its limitations, but a man can dream…? 🧵

Enjoying an interesting worldbuilding discussion in a Discord server & it makes me want to ask: Where do you start when worldbuilding?

For me, I tend to have some initial conceptual territory I want to explore, a few central ideas re: both character and setting, and I expand/deepen from there.
