'We should build pipelines in every direction,' says Poilievre.

A less-than-precise recommendation from the fella who's never worked in the private sector.

A historic site with no displays.

A public hall that’s closed six days a week.

Surrounded by busted sidewalks and a park rebuild that hasn’t begun.

Toronto spent vast sums and 20 years on this project. It was very late and far over budget, yet it is a shambles.

How Toronto Forgets Its History (Again) - Spacing Toronto
The north portion of St. Lawrence Market is arguably the second most historic spot in the post-colonial city, after Fort York. A public market has been operating there continuously since 1803, which i...

When the REM in Montreal is fully built out...26 new stations on three branches will be added to Montreal's rail transport network, which already includes the 68 stations of the metro, and the 52 stations of the EXO. Not bad, until you look at Paris.

During the convoy occupation of #Ottawa, air quality was significantly degraded by idling vehicle emissions. Pollution levels were 4 times worse than Mexico City's average. Dangerous PM2.5 particles reached >80.

A dirty assault.

☀️ Rooftop solar could power 530–730 homes in Kitchener via six proposed installations — and maybe charge EVs for millions of km! 💡

City council has backed the move unanimously: shorturl.at/OQRQZ

Rooftop solar panels look to power hundreds of Kitchener homes
Each project would produce enough energy to power between 530 and 730 homes, or charge electric vehicles for millions of kilometres.

As the world teeters on the brink of collapse . . . the Guardian asks:

Should my boyfriend get rid of his laundry basket?

Anita thinks dirty clothes can go straight in the machine. Jayden believes the laundry hamper serves a purpose.

I understand the appeal of nonstick pans ... Here’s the thing: Those pans aren’t even that good for cooking. For most of the foods we make at home ... a well-seasoned carbon steel or cast-iron pan performs better.

More broadly, if the Trump administration succeeds in politicizing the BLS, TIPS won’t be protected against inflation. They’ll only be protected against inflation the administration is willing to admit is happening.

Have investors thought through the implications?

Krugman:
TIPS are linked to the official Consumer Price Index. But the BLS won’t be issuing new reports during the government shutdown, which means that it’s highly likely that the next CPI report, due Oct. 15, won’t come out on time ... and it’s anyone’s guess when we’ll get fresh data.

The Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) market is worth trillions of dollars.

TIPS are government securities that adjust payouts based on the official inflation rate. The US government shut-down & Trump shenanigans put this market (and financial stability) at risk.

"That means that, on average, the stuff at the top of an Amazon search results page is bad. It’s low-quality, high-priced junk."

Amazon needs to be brought to heel. That's what governments are for.

Researchers ... call this “Amazon’s pricing paradox”. Amazon gets to insist that it has the lowest prices in the business, but no one can find those prices. Instead, we all pay a massive Amazon tax every time we shop there, and the merchants we buy from are paying an Amazon tax, too.
jamiemackinnon.bsky.social
Guardian:

"Amazon makes more than $50bn every year charging merchants for search placement. When you search for a product on Amazon, the top results aren’t the best matches: they’re the matches that pay the highest fees to Amazon to be top of the list.

Doug Ford, elected with 43% of the popular vote--and 20% of eligible votes--tells 20 municipal leaders from Brampton to Parry Sound that they CANNOT PROTECT children, cyclists, pedestrians from speeding drivers.

That ain't populism. It's lethal tyranny.
