Americans have little confidence in many societal institutions, including Congress, big business, TV news, and the criminal justice system.

The reason why so many journalists leave for jobs in PR, comms and marketing is because they often pay better, have better hours, and there are fewer cycles of layoffs. Every year, it gets harder for people from diverse backgrounds to stay in journalism, especially after more rounds of layoffs.

It may be hard to believe, but Twitter was once a useful public space instead of a weird monetization scheme for racist ragebait chatbots.

These laws are such a tell for what it’s really about: making life for trans people hard, not protecting the health of children.

An important reminder that when you see the term "anti-woke" it is often a euphemism for "contains material from Stormfront"

This is one of the clearest examples of a disordered counterpublic capturing an institution I've seen. It's nice to have your work proven on a regular basis, but also very bad.

You could not make this up. Now, because UK transphobes are so obsessed with toilets - any woman or girl that bigots think do not look like women or girls, can be banned from using toilets! The bizarre ‘guidance’ was based on transphobia but will now impact all women & how feminine they look*
"Trans people could be banned from single-sex spaces based on how they look. The Times has seen the equalities watchdog’s final guidance, which Whitehall figures fear Bridget Phillipson is delaying to avoid a political backlash" [Times]

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

Absolutely no way to read this and not conclude that the Department of Justice has been deeply corrupted. And this is from a time when career lawyers were in place, pushing back against illegality. With firings and resignations, the politicization will just get worse.

They say Gibb, a political appointee, is a “direct block to the BBC maintaining its chartered objective of independence”.

Sehr spannendes Gespräch, vor allem auch für Journalist:innen.

Großartige, klare Fragen und Antworten zum Umgang mit der Gefahr von Rechtsradikalen und Narrativen, die sie normalisieren.

1️⃣ The BBC is by far the most widely used source of news in the UK both online and offline, and it is more widely used as a source of news than many public service media around Europe. It is also the most popular source of news among both Conservative and Labour voters

Slight curiosity on how much of this was not just powered by the media attacking itself, but also Twitter's right-wing reply-guy echo chamber becoming a source of "the public opinion". You can see it on every "BREAKING" post that remains there from the news personalities unable to leave.
