Shocking chart. Particularly alarming that the UK's figure has gone from 5% to ~10% since around 2014 whereas it's taken about 25 years for the same to happen in the US.
Attention is on NEETs today, but the problem is much worse.

NEETs include stay-at-home parents & jobseekers.

Strip those out to focus on people not working, not seeking work, not in education & not parenting: this group of economically & socially dislocated young adults has *doubled* in a decade.

Let's talk about tomorrow's jobs data: what to expect?

1/ First thing I'll be looking at is the unemployment rate (ideally, unrounded).

The Chicago Fed nowcasts 4.34% for September, a tiny bit higher than 4.32% in August.

(They also have a nowcast for October of 4.36%)

Perhaps it’s more like a Russian Mavrodi*i-style Ponzi scheme: everyone knows it’s fake, but we participate anyway as an alternative to our socioeconomic vacuum.

If I think it’s a bubble, you think it’s a bubble, everyone thinks it’s a bubble and the Fed is warning of the possibility of disorderly fall in equity prices … does that still make it a bubble?

A year or so ago, it was popular (and quite persuasive) to blame inflation for the unpopularity of most incumbent governments. Quite interesting that three new governments since then (Trump, Starmer, Merz) have rapidly become unpopular too.

Imagine, if you wish, the manager of a football club shouting at the fans that parking the bus and general hacking and shit-housery all over the pitch is, unfortunately, the only viable plan to win games. And then you look up the league table, and the club is 14pts off the first Europa League spots

Very senior economist speaks out against Summers and against the discipline continuing to bestow privileges and honors on him; calls out sexism in economics.
